8 Creepy But Cute Sea Creatures

With Halloween just weeks away, you’re probably not thinking about taking a dive in the deep blue sea. You’re most likely focused on horror movies, costumes, and monsters, but some of the creepiest creatures lurk in the depths of the ocean. Some are nightmare inducing; others look like they'll get along great with your Beta. Either way, these are some of the cutest creepiest critters in the sea.

Cleaner Shrimp

Meet the underwater dancing queen. To entice fish to open their mouths, cleaner shrimp will dance to distract the fish so that they can venture into their mouths and remove bloodsucking parasites without harm.

Frogfish

Frogfish are the stalkers of the sea. Instead of using their camouflaging abilities to hide from predators, they use it to attract their prey. While their prey is approaching, they wait patiently for the perfect moment to attack. Their options for meals are larger than you may think. Why? Their mouths can expand to 12 times its resting size!

Giant Devil Scorpionfish

This bad boy looks like something hot off the set of American Horror Story. Scorpionfish are named for the venomous spines found on their back and pectoral fins. Their bright color warns other sea creatures of their venomous sting.

Gobi

Though we are unsure of the specific species, this little Gobi guy is giving us flashbacks to James and the Giant Peach. Remember the glow worm? Coming across one of these in an underwater excursion wouldn’t be so scary.

Green Moray Eel

Picture the tallest NBA player you know. Now, add a few feet and sharp exposed teeth to that and you’ll have a Green Moray Eel. What’s even crazier is a Green Moray Eel isn’t green at all! Their bodies are blue but a yellow coating that lays on top of them makes them appear green. Similar to bees, they will only bite a human if they are provoked.

Green Spotted & White Eyed Moray Eels

The Green Spotted and the White Eyed are two out of 200 types of moray eels world-wide. These eels have a pharyngeal jaw, or a second set of teeth that allows them to swallow their prey whole. This creepy ability inspired the creature in the "Alien" film franchise.

Spiny Lobster

Hey lobsters, let’s get in formation! Spiny lobsters migrate in single-file lines to offshore reefs to avoid cold and turbulent water. Unlike other lobsters, spiny lobsters do not have large claws. They are known for their meaty tails. Did you think you wouldn’t be able to eat any of these creepy (but cute) creatures?

Caribbean Reef Squid

The Caribbean Reef Squid is a cigar-shaped creature with ten tentacles forming a circle around their mouth. They're most widely known for their color, which varies in shade from translucent to iridescent. Caribbean Reef Squid are the masters of sending mixed messages. Just like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, they can display a different pattern on either side of their body simultaneously.
