"We’re Not Going To Let Anyone Bully Us," Says Cereal Café Owner After Attacks

Owner Gary Keery told BuzzFeed News that violence does not solve anything, after the café was attacked by anti-gentrification protesters on Saturday.

On Saturday night, Shoreditch's Cereal Killer Café was attacked with paint-bombs and smoke-bombs in a protest against gentrification in the area.

Unhappy with the state of the country? Why not attack a small business #smart

The café has been at the focus of criticism over gentrification of Shoreditch since it opened last year. During Saturday's protest it suffered more damage than surrounding businesses, and cereal was thrown at the shopfront, suggesting a specific attack.

On Sunday morning, the café was open as usual. "Even if we listened to them and closed the shop, that’s not going to solve anything at all," owner Gary Keery told BuzzFeed News.

"When the staff phoned me to say what was happening I couldn’t believe it. It’s crazy," Keery said.

We started a business to deliver an experience to cereal lovers, and have been thanked by local businesses for bringing tourists to the area

"People like the idea of the café and what we do. They don't mind paying £3.50 for cereals that we import from all around the world," Keery said.

He added: "The businesses on Brick Lane all work together. People have said that since we've opened it's been good for their businesses."

The mob won't win, wearing masks with pitch forks and torches, it's 2015. #hatecrime

When asked what message the cereal café had for its attackers, Keery said: "If you want to get your point across, it doesn't need to result in violence.

"People would listen to you if you weren't a violent mob mindlessly attacking a cereal café.

"We're not going to let anyone bully us."
