What one scene from Gilmore Girls made me realize about my mental health.

Gilmore Girls, a beloved show both in the past and present. It shows the ideal and wonderful relationship a mother can have with her daughter. I clung to this show because Lorelai and Rory are my mom and I in almost every aspect. I loved watching the light-hearted, comical and dramatic moments the show brought, because I could turn my mind off for a bit. I never thought that one semi-humorous scene would get me thinking about my mental health.

I always related to Rory, how hard she worked and how she looked at life, or so I thought. Now I realize that I have some Paris in me too; the worry, fear and worst of all anxiety, something I have no control over. This realization came to me when I was watching Paris Geller have meltdown in the Chilton bathroom. This scene acted out what my mind is like most of the time: the illogical and anxious Paris side vs the logical and calm Rory side. It is always hard to explain to people what is going on in my mind due to my anxiety, but this seemingly insignificant scene is a perfect example.

Not everyone can relate to this scene or what kind of message it might bring, it might just be me. When I texted my friend after I saw this scene and told her that this is what it is like in my mind, she simply laughed at how Paris was freaking out. I don’t talk much about my mental health, I didn’t grow up in a situation where we talked about these things, although I know my family would accept me 100%, it is still uncomfortable.

Whether or not the writers meant to portray what an anxious mind can look and sound like, I will never know, but I am certainly glad they did. It allowed me to open up to myself about what my mind and anxiety are truly like.
