For anyone who is living under a rock, 13 Reasons Why is a new show streaming on Netflix about a high schooler named Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) who kills herself.
While we're not aware of the depths of what's going on quite yet in the first few minutes of Episode 1, we see Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) struggling to get through a day of school in these first few minutes of 13 Reasons Why.
He also sees Hannah's parents walking over to what used to be her locker. After following them into the hallway, Clay decides to go to the bathroom for a moment of reprieve.
The bathroom stalls have a lot of graffiti on the walls, mostly consisting of negative comments.
And when Clay leans his head against the wall in one of the bathroom stalls, he faces two phrases that basically foreshadow what's to come in the rest of the series.
The sentences read, "Don't let the world bring you down" and "No means no."
"Don't let the world bring you down" is arguably a message that relates to how Hannah ended up feeling devastated by the negative actions of other people around her.
And "No means no" is an obvious message relating to how Bryce Walker (Justin Prentice) raped Hannah and Jessica.
Clay's moment of reprieve only lasts for a brief minute in the first episode, but it seems to represent the main topics the show aims to address.
