Top 10 Best "Bad" Horror Movies

These are my (a long-time horror junkie) top picks for low rated, underappreciated horror movies that are ~mandatory viewing~ for anyone who enjoys a bit of ridiculous, campy horror. Have fun!

10. Hide and Seek (2005)

A true classic in the mystery horror genre, Dakota Fanning and Robert DeNiro show off their versatility in this out-of-the-box, borderline who-dun-it project. Brief synopsis, Robert DeNiro's wife, Dakota Fanning's mother, commits suicide, and against the recommendation of her doctor, daddy-dearest decides moving away from their home in the city to a big house in the deep suburbs would be a great idea; obviously, until, you know, she makes an "imaginary friend" who pulls some creepy shit.

9. Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (2009)

Normally | would recommend watching the first movie in any series before the others, but that's not the case for this duo. Cabin Fever (2002), in my opinion, was an absolute flop. Boring and unoriginal, it can be skipped. Early on in Spring Fever there's even a little animated explanation to how the rest of the story unfolds during the opening credits, almost as if they knew this one would be much better than the first (which, ironically, this one is definitely lesser-known than its prequel). Basic storyline is that the flesh-eating virus from the first movie somehow contaminates a small town's water supply and infects anyone who drinks it. The movie mostly takes place at a high school dance, and is clearly very inspired by Carrie.

8. Trailer Park of Terror (2008)

This is one of my personal favourites, though it's so low on the list because everyone I've ever made watch it all thought it was mediocre at best (which is, like, the whole point of this list though, right?). It gives a perfect balance of gore and sex appeal, topped with a low budget and a (mostly) unknown cast. The premise of this beauty is a group of troubled teens and their church leader stay the night in a trailer park hosted by a seemingly sexy park manager during a storm. Obviously, terror ensues and all that good shit.

7. Maniac (2012)

Who knew Elijah Wood could play a psycho killer? Probably anyone who's ever looked at his face. He has that perfect pale skin, piercing blue eye combo that produces the heebie-jeebies, but somehow in a good way. Like that moment in LOTR where he's looking at Sam. You know the one. Anyways, this flick is shot in first-person, so the entire film takes place from Elijah's POV. A general idea is that he's a psychopath, or a ~maniac~ if you will, who has an adoration for murdering young, beautiful women; until he meets who he believes to be the love of his life. Said girl fits the description of the type he typically wants to see bloody and screaming, but something about her makes him see her differently. Until, of course, his shit starts catching up with him.

6. Regression (2015)

Ethan Hawke, Emma Watson and her HP colleague Dabid Thewlis (more commonly known as Professor Lupin) join forces in this dark thriller to generously provide us with one of the best thriller mysteries ever. Although slightly (and I do mean slightly) predictable, it still gives that unsettling feeling of not knowing who or what is responsible for the attrocities depicted in the film. Throughout almost the entirety of the piece, it's uncertain whether the movie actually has supernatural elements or not. The movie focuses on a case Emma Watson brought to the church and police about an apparent rape\murder combo, on which Ethan Hawke is assigned to. The only catch is, as the gif provided depicts, she can't remember any of the events. Convenient, right?

5. Terrifier (2016)

Anyone who has Netflix has probably scrolled past this at some point. Very quickly it became a cult-classic among horror movie enthusiasts, going viral online very soon after its addition to the Netflix queue. It is a very low-budget film which lands it on this list, and one I particularly enjoyed. As I'd previously mentioned somewhere here, it's another healthy mix of gore and sex-appeal (anything involving hot girls and murder is something I'm going to have an interest in). The film takes place on halloween, where two friends leaving a halloween party encounter a creepy clown. The body count is fairly high considering 90% of the movie all happens in one night.

4. Martyrs (2008)

This one isn't necessarily a "bad" movie. It scores around 7/10 on IMDb, and a 59% on Rotten Tomatoes. I did however want to throw it in here solely because of how pure genius it is. Almost no one I've mentioned it to has heard of it, so though it may not be absolutely hated among those who have seen it, it's not very commonly known. I saw this movie when I was around 12, and it definitely scarred me (for the better, in my opinion). It shaped how I view and appreciate horror as a whole today. A young girl escapes captivity from a mysterious group of people who spend all day every day torturing her, and from then on it's her life's mission to find them and kill them. Also, she's haunted by a terrifying hallucination. (Or is it?)

3. Cursed (2004)

Ah, a typical werewolf movie. Christina Ricci and Jesse Eisenberg star in this ludicrous take on the classic werewolf story directed by Wes Craven. There isn't a whole lot of intruduction necessary for this one, considering the gif provided. It's funny, dark, and ridiculous. The story centers on a werewolf loose in LA, and after three friends are mauled by the beast, they have to figure out how to stop their curse. And, as an added bonus, Judy Greer revives her persona from 13 Going on 30 to play another absolutely flawlessly executed bitch.

2. American Mary (2012)

American Mary may or may not be the most badass female villain of all time. Katharine Isabelle gives a stunning performance as a red-hot surgeon with a personal vendetta against one of her teachers. The plot surrounds a young med student, living paycheck to paycheck, struggling to make ends meet. In an unfortunate twist of events she is assaulted at a party, and thus sparks her decisions to switch from general to plastic surgery. As the plot thickens, we are introduced to a variety of characters and their requests for unorthodox surgeries they otherwise wouldn't be able to get anywhere else. And, of course, her business is like, super illegal.

1. Ginger Snaps (2000)

By now you've probably deciphered that I genuinely enjoy any film in which the main character is a woman, judging by the 70% of films on this list that fit that description. Any kick-ass leading lady, especially ones who turn the tables and become the killer, is right up my alley. Something about the idea of a woman taking control and deciding she's not going to be fucked with anymore is very appealing (spoken like a true feminist), but I digress. Ginger Snaps is the original Jennifer's Body, as you can tell by the gif. (I'm not entirely sure if JB took direct inspiration from GS, but I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if they did.) The film gives big late 90s-early 2000s vibes in the absolute best way, without being too campy for the average movie-watcher to enjoy. Fair warning though, this one is more of a creepy, halloweeny type watch, rather than being genuinely scary. A brief intro to the film without getting too detailed, is two sisters in a small Canadian town are attacked by something in the woods, and from then on one of them begins experiencing some unwanted changes to say the least. And yes, again, the protagonist\antagonist combo is portrayed by Katharine Isabelle. Sorry not sorry.
