How To Deal With Rejection Like An Adult.

(You can file this one under self-care).

    Feat. My Spotify rejection playlist

Rejection is fickle. One minute you’re going about your day and the next you’re lying on your bed, housing sleeves of double-stuffed Oreos and cursing Norah Jones for just getting you so well. It’s okay, I’ve been there, you’ve been there, we’ve all been there. Whether it’s from your top choice college, a love interest, or a dream job, it’s certainly not an easy pill to swallow. Unfortunately, the reality is that rejection is a common theme throughout life and the sooner you learn to deal with it in a healthy manner, the easier it will be to hear the word “no.” In my travels as a 25 year old wannabe adult, I’m confident in saying I’ve dealt with rejection from all of the aforementioned sources. In the end, it’s made me a stronger person than I could have ever imagined. So I’m here to document and pass on my wisdom to friends and family whom I plan on bribing to read this article.

Enter my step by step guide to crying the river, building the bridge and getting over it.

    Step 1A: Crying the river.

    “expect sadness
 like
 you expect rain.
 both,
 cleanse you.”

    ― Nayyirah Waheed

If anyone ever tells you crying isn’t cool, drop them. You don’t need that negativity in your life. You’re a strong, independent person, who occasionally needs to take a t-break from the soul crushing reality of life and let a few tears fall. It’s okay to not be okay. What? What was that? SAY IT AGAIN FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK. IT’S OKAY TO NOT BE OKAY.

The first step to getting over rejection is to wallow in it. Give yourself the time to let it bother you. Step into a hot shower, blast some heart wrenching music and pretend you can’t tell the difference between your own tears and the water from the shower streaking down your face.

To get you started, I’ve graciously taken the initiative to share a few of my favorite tear-inducing songs from my own personal Spotify playlist titled “Fall to Pieces.” (Follow it here: https://open.spotify.com/user/12123276569/playlist/1gbRddglZAQnF9xLhVaABm?si=FD-liDCTSnOYFIvJKEIOeQ)

**Disclaimer: Most of these songs are country because country and sadness go together like peanut butter and jelly.

Let Her Cry by Hootie & The Blowfish

Break On Me by Keith Urban

All Too Well by Taylor Swift

    Cry Baby by Demi Lovato

    White Houses by Vanessa Carlton

I Could Use a Love Song by Maren Morris

    Remedy by Adele

    Fall by Clay Walker

Step 1B: Reset and a deep breath

Let’s be honest, no one can go from sobbing Adele lyrics into your pillow to crushing life in the same breath. That’s why I’ve made a quick sub-step in between. A modified pump up playlist if you will. Because just as important as letting yourself fall apart knowing when it’s time to pick yourself up.

    The Mountain by Dierks Bentley

    Seasons by Greyson Chance

    Heart Break by Lady A

Everything’s Gonna Be Alright by David Lee Murphy & Kenny Chesney

The Best Is Yet To Come by Sheppard

Step 2+3: Build a bridge and get over it.

Now that you’ve spent a day or two moping around like a degenerate sad sack who no one wants to be around, it’s time to get back on your feet. You can’t go on like this forever, ruining everyone else’s day, people will start to really hate you (if they don’t already).

So, turn off the sad music, turn off the tears and get over it. You’ve had your time to wallow and beg for pity. Unless your rejection is life-altering, realize that it’s not the end of the world. There are other people out there that would kill just to have the opportunity to be rejected from whoever/whatever didn’t want you. Things could be so much worse and you know it.

Put on your favorite power outfit, grab your go-to caffeinated beverage and crank the volume next time Work Bitch comes on shuffle, It’s time to start taking steps to accomplishing whatever goal it is that keeps evading you.

Remember that life is full of rejection but thankfully, it’s also full of opportunities. The right opportunity will eventually come along, but the mindset you have will be a determining factor in whether you are able to take full advantage.
