Tom Fletcher Settles Your Christmas Debates Once And For All

When is it OK to put the tree up, open your presents, and eat your Christmas dinner? And, most importantly, is Die Hard a Christmas film?

We all know Tom Fletcher as a member of our beloved McFly. And if you know him well you'll also know he's a MASSIVE lover of Christmas and the festive period. So much so, he's written his debut novel around the theme, a children's book called The Christmasaurus, which he's turned into a play and will hit the stage next year.

So we thought it only right that we invite him in to BuzzFeed UK to settle the age-old Christmas debates ahead of this year's big day. If you've ever argued over what's the correct way to do Christmas, Tom has the final say here...

    1) Turkey or goose?

"Turkey all the way for Christmas dinner. Although I did do a nut roast one year, which is pretty good. It's not the same as turkey though."

    2) When should you put your Christmas tree up?

"For me, putting a Christmas tree up, as long as Halloween and Bonfire Night are done, I think it's perfectly acceptable any time from then on... My wife disagrees."

    3) And when should you take it down?

"Actually, I mean, I love Christmas a lot but I am up for taking it down relatively early. I prefer putting it up early and taking it down early rather than leaving it up late. I kind of feel like in the New Year it's nice to get a fresh start."

    4) Yorkshire puddings: acceptable Christmas dinner component or no?

[laughs] "You've got to have Yorkshire puddings on a Christmas dinner! I've never heard of not having a Yorkshire pudding on Christmas dinner. It's a roast dinner so I feel like you'd be lacking a real... you know, why not? Why wouldn't you have one?"

    5) Is Die Hard a Christmas film?

"Die Hard is totally a Christmas movie. It's set at Christmas, the end credits come up and it's a Christmas song. It's a Christmas movie."

    6) Plain lights or coloured lights?

"I actually quite like a bit of both. I like plain lights on... We've got a fake Christmas tree that we've had for years and I like plain lights on that one. Then I like having a 'tacky' tree, where we just chuck, you know, anything goes on that tree. Coloured lights on that one."

    7) Bread sauce: Y/N?

"I've never made bread sauce. I'm going to go no on the bread sauce. Sorry."

    8) When is acceptable to have food on Christmas Day?

"Christmas Day for me is just a constant day of eating. So if there's loads of family staying over, someone will make a bacon sandwich or something... Plus we probably would have eaten about four selection boxes across the breakfast period. And then Christmas dinner's planned normally for about 2 o'clock but usually it runs a little bit late."

    9) Christmas pudding: Y/N?

"Christmas pudding is the best! Although we always have to buy an extra one for my nan. We have one that we share and then Nan has her own one. The Heston Blumenthal one with the orange in the middle is amazing."

    10) Should you be allowed to open one present at midnight?

"No, do you know what, I'm not a fan of opening presents before Christmas Day. I'm not a midnight present opener. I'm not that kind of guy."

    11) So do you open presents on Christmas morning or Christmas evening?

"Christmas morning! It's the first thing on the list. You wake up Christmas Day, you open presents. Wake up. Presents. Pre anything, except maybe coffee."

    12) Should shops be open on Boxing Day?

"No, I'm not a fan of going out shopping on Boxing Day. I like sitting on the sofa and watching TV and eating leftover Christmas food. But if people want to go out shopping... You guys go for it. I will not be there."

    13) Tinsel: tacky or good?

"I love a bit of tinsel. Tinsel lasts forever, doesn't it as well. I'm sure I've had the same bits of tinsel since I was a kid."

    14) Tear off wrapping paper or take it off carefully?

"Rip. It's all about the rip. I'm not a fan of, you know, saving it for next year."

    15) Buck's fizz at breakfast: Y/N?

"I think I remember my nan and grandad having Buck's fizz at breakfast. I've never had it. Maybe I'll try it this year."

    16) Brussels sprouts: good or bad?

"I love a Brussels sprout. My sprouts are pretty good too, I've perfected them over the years. I've made Christmas dinner for the last three years, I think, and I make a nice sprout now."

    17) Telling your children Santa is real: Y or N?

"Santa is real. I don't even know where this questioning Santa has come from. He's totally real. I haven't bought any presents for my kids; Santa's going to bring them. I've got faith in you, Santa."

Thanks for helping us solve all of those dilemmas, Tom!
