Five Types Of People Who Pitch Their Idea At A Hackathon

Showing up for a weekend of coding, you can only hope someone will have a an idea worth your time and energy. But, in fact, when it comes to pitch time, every hackathon you encounter the same five people.

1. old person who doesn’t understand modern technology

Their idea: Something that sounds like it came out of the Jetsons. "What if robots wrapped up your clothes at a store!"

Pros of joining this group: You'll spend the whole morning talking and then probably take a nap. Most likely, you'll never have to build anything.

2. wannabe business guy

His idea: something that he's already pitched to Y Combinator and been rejected

Pros of joining this group: He'll probably talk the whole time, so you won't have to say much

3. sterotypical nerd

Idea: Something to do with comic books...Amazon for comic books, Yelp for comic books, Pinterest for comic books. The list just goes on and on...just like they do... about comic books

Pros of joining this group: You'll probably catch yourself saying, "Shit, I never knew there were so many goddamn types of comic books."

4. lost mom

Her idea: Something convoluted that has nothing to do with the topic of the hackathon

Pros of joining this group: She will be the only woman pitching, and you've got to support women in tech. Not to mention, her strained dynamic with the child she has dragged along can only mean hours of entertainment. But, alas, she'll probably give up on her half-baked dream and just join some guy's group.

5. tech bro

Ok, you knew this one was coming, but we can't just pretend he isn't there.

His idea: Something that already exists or that the hackathon organizers just suggested as an idea. "What about an app for reserving tables at restaurants!"

Pros of joining this group: If you're looking for a date, all the cute guys will be here

There really is no good choice here. But, just remember, no matter which group you choose, you were never going to win the hackathon anyway, because the winning team all came together and are already off in another room working on their amazing project. Happy hacking!
