10 Ways You're Actually Killing It In Your 20s

We all feel pretty lost and like we're failing at this whole adulting thing. But here are some ways you're actually killing it in your 20s.

Posted on

1. You have a job

It doesn’t matter if it’s your dream career or a part-time jig at a CD store while you save and search something else, it’s still a job. It’s your hard earned cash and you should be proud for being adult enough to earn it.

2. You have a roof over your head

If you have a fully furnished house, that’s amazing! Good for you! But if you’re like the rest of us and are living in a shitty apartment or even still living at home, that’s perfectly awesome as well. You have a place to call home; a place you can go to at the end of the day. It may not seem like much and it may not even be your own place (i.e. your parents place) but you already have much more than the 578, 424 people who classified as homeless in America in 2014 (

3. You have hobbies

In high school we were told to join sports and clubs. In college we were forced to take classes that had absolutely nothing to do with our major. Why? Because that made us “well rounded” individuals. Although it sounds like a bunch of crap, being “well rounded” is something that we should strive for even after our schooling is over; putting all our eggs in one basket not only makes us boring, but also limits us from changing, growing, and having fun. Back in the day it was clubs and classes, in the real world it’s having a few hobbies. Whether it’s reading, hiking, going to the gym, cooking, blogging, sports, WHATEVER. Find a few hobbies to keep you busy and constantly stimulated. And no, Netflix does not count as a real hobby.

4. You can cook

It doesn’t have to be the fanciest thing you find on Pinterest, but you should be able to at least cook yourself some pasta and frozen veggies at this point.

5. You at least try to be healthy

You don’t have to be a Crossfit fanatic to be healthy but you should at least try to be a little health conscious. This could be making your own food instead of take out every night, taking the stairs at work, walking or riding your bike instead of driving everywhere. And I mean you don't have to do it everyyyy time but A for effort, right?

6. You can make health related appointments on your own

As much of a hassle and scary as it is to call the doctor and make an appointment for a routine check-up, it’s one of those things that needs to be done. Otherwise, that pain in your side that seems like nothing, so you ignore it for a few weeks, could send you to the ER with a kidney infection. And even though your teeth seem all nice a pearly white from those crest white strips, they still might be covered in plaque. So be safe and make the appointment.

7. You know what you want in a significant other and don't settle for less

Maybe you're already in a relationship or maybe you're like me and single AF, it doesn't matter. Knowing what you want in a significant other and knowing that you are amazing and don't deserve anything less is pretty important and adult-like. Don't settle for what's convenient.

8. You’re at least making an effort to have a budget

It doesn't have to be super strict (and maybe not always followed to a T) but you should at least budget for your bills first and then decide to go on that shopping spree. Then again, sometimes MAC is more important than eating....

9. You know what's going on in the world

Even if you get most of your news updates from twitter, Facebook, or The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, at least you’re making some sort of effort to know what’s going on in the world around you. Baby steps....

10. You know who you are…or at least starting to figure it out

Most of us don't know who we are yet or what we want to do with the rest of our lives, but if you have even an inkling of an idea about who you are as a person than you've already ahead of most people.

And for those times when you just feel like you're failing at this whole adulting thing, just remember this is the time for trial and error and figuring sh*t out, so don't worry about it. Also remember, you're not the only one struggling.
