Semple told BuzzFeed News that he banned Kapoor from using his pink to "give him a taste of his own medicine."

Semple said he and his artist friends also wanted to use Vantablack but could not gain access to it due to Kapoor's deal, which Semple called "stingy, shortsighted and immoral."

"I believe materials should be open and that way the community can develop them," Semple said. "It's the best chance this awesome substance has."

Semple said he has been in a few charity projects and group shows with Kapoor but has never met him.

"One of my friends is friends with a friend of his, and I've heard he really wants to get his hands on the pink," Semple said.

"There's no way I'd back down now unless he shares the black," he said, adding that Kapoor is "the selfish one in all this."

He said that he would love to un-ban Kapoor from using the pink, but "can't do that until the community is un-banned from using Vantablack."

Semple said he has been blown away by the responses he has gotten for his pink.

"The most exciting thing is seeing all the work that's being made with it, things I'd never have imagined," he said.

"The pressure is on Anish to share the black with us all but so far sadly we've been unsuccessful," he added.

UPDATE: "This product is using Anish Kapoor's name as a promotion tool," a spokesperson for Kapoor told BuzzFeed News. "We have now put this matter to our lawyers who will take appropriate action."
