Create A Functional Home Office With These 35 Items If You Want To Feel More Productive

Make your WFH setup more enjoyable and (hopefully) get more done.

    1. A wall-mounted shelf desk — it's easily assembled and great for small spaces to give you a trendy yet functional workspace.

boho style office with the white piping and wood shelf mounted ladder desk
three tier storage desk mounted to the wall with faux vines on either side

Promising review: "I had this blank corner in my living room and I just knew this ladder desk would be a gorgeous addition to the area. I don't have an extra room for an office or even the kind of space in our small home to designate to a bulky desk. It was very easy to assemble, it took maybe 25 minutes to put together. I love having my own spot to get my work done on my MacBook. Plus, this spot is perfect to work on any crafts/DIYs. I added a pouf seat instead of a chair just to save even more space since it easily slides underneath the desk. Anyway, I'm so stoked about this purchase! I highly recommend it." —Heather Nicholson

Get it from Amazon for $149.69+ (available in three colors).

    2. An adjustable mesh desk chair because you need somewhere comfortable to sit. This chair will provide you with all the lumbar support, adjustable flip-up armrests, a neck rest, and recline function you never would've experienced with your dining room chair.

reviewer image of the black mesh office chair

Psst — For even *more* support, you can snag that lumbar pillow pictured on the right here.

Promising review: "I got spoiled by a Herman Miller chair at work. I've been putting up with some cheap cloth and foam computer desk chair for years. Now that I'm a bit older, and do some work at home, I needed more comfort and support, and this chair works for what I need and it didn't cost me $800. Granted this one isn't as adjustable, and the lumbar support isn't pronounced, but it is soooo much better than what I had. It might be difficult for some to put together, as it can be a bit heavy for one person, but the weight also contributes to the 'well-made' feeling once put together. The best thing about this chair is the size of the seat, which fully supports my butt, and back of my thighs, all the way to the back of my knees. The neck support is nice too, but I could see some being irritated with the limited positioning — it can be removed." —Christopher L. Dulawan

Get it from Amazon for $269.50 (available in two colors).

    3. Or an ergonomic exercise ball chair designed to keep your mind and body engaged with micro-movements. Now you can stay more focused on your work and reduce pressure on your lower back and shoulders at the same time!

It's recommended for people ranging from 5' to 5'11" tall. If you have a tall desk that isn't adjustable and you find this chair a bit too low to the ground, you can pick up leg extenders to add extra height.

Promising review: "I have issues with my lower back and have struggled for years to find the right office chair for my home office. I sit and work about eight to 10 hours a day. Never thought about a ball chair until my doctor said maybe I should try it. Oh my goodness. Why didn’t he suggest this sooner?!! It works fantastic. Because it forces you to sit in an upright position and not slouch it relieves the pressure on the lower back and shoulder blades. While my pain is not completely gone it has gotten better and will probably continue to improve the longer I use the chair. While everyone has different issues and different pain who knows if it will work for you but it did for me. Try it! You might just be amazed." –Katy

You can set the timer for 5-, 10-, 15-, 20-, and 30-minute blocks by rotating it to the time you want. Then it will start the countdown. There are also four volume options in case you don't want to disrupt any other people in your home.

Promising review: "I love this timer to keep me on task while working from home! For the price, I was honestly impressed with the quality. My only suggestion would be an option for the display to stay backlit. You can press the snooze button on top to light the display for about five seconds, but that’s not super convenient if you have it rotated in timer mode, plus you have to actively press the button rather than just glancing at how much time is left. Honestly, this is a very small quibble that I could fix simply by not working in a dimly lit room, but it’s really the only critique I have. All in all, this is a fun and functional desk accessory!" —Angela Reiber

Get it from Amazon for $18.99 (available in 30- and 60-minute configurations and six colors).

    7. Or a productivity timer you'll need if focusing for long periods of time is a real struggle for you. Set it to anywhere from one to 60 minutes. As the color disappears, you'll be closer to taking your well-deserved break. Hopefully, structure and disciple is on your vision board for this year because you've just found something to help you master both.

A popular way of doing this is to set the timer for 50 minutes, so then you work work work for that stretch and then take the ten minutes at the top of the hour for other tasks like checking Instagram or answering texts. Then you can restart the timer and do it again. If anything, it's just sometimes a reminder of what you can get done in a certain amount of time if you block distractions out, which will motivate you to *keep* working that way.

Promising review: "I’m a newly discovered ADHD adult and use this to keep myself moving along tasks through the day. Set goals, hurry, move on. I’m self employed and many days work from computer with headphones on. While the beeper on this is loud on the hi setting, it is no match for noise cancelling headphones. So I took it apart, soldered and drilled in a super bright LED bulb in the corner of the dial face. And now it is perrrrfect." —Atkins

Get it from Amazon for $18.99 (available in five colors).

As a fairly active person most of my life (basketball, horseback riding, running, etc.) I haven't been kind to my body. My back, knees, hips, and feet have all paid the price. Promising review: "I bought these pens during quarantine, not expecting much, considering they are quite inexpensive. I've used well-known brand marker/pens in the past, and didn't want to pay much for markers I'd use for coloring. I was concerned about the tips bending or bleeding, but I was completely wrong and am very satisfied with this product! They do not bleed, and the tips are strong and thin. I use these pens for coloring, hand lettering, and note taking, and they're exactly what I was looking for! The only regret I have is that I did not order the larger pack with more colors!!" —Michael Fanizzi

Promising review: "Excellent product! I have been searching for an organizer to put on the top of my dresser, and I could never find anything unique, functional and not too big. I came across this organizer and took a chance since I wasn't seeing it in person. I am so glad I did! The product arrived overnight (instead of two days) and was super easy to put together... just follow the pictures exactly as shown. They even included a screwdriver, so you don't need anything extra to put it together. It is super cute, fun and fits perfectly. I definitely recommend." —lmeglin

Promising review: "This is awesome and exactly what I was looking for. It is super comfortable to use in bed and in the recliner that I typically write from. I am a writer who primarily sits with my laptop directly in my lap, and this is perfect for my needs. It has a slot for my phone, but I could also prop some pens, a small pad, or other various items in there depending on what I needed. The mouse pad area is great." —birchwood29
