New Media Pedagogy

So what is this pedagogy all about?

New Media pedagogy seeks to "replace expertise with exploration & engagement" and focus on "process and practices" rather than solely the product.

This pedagogy is highly focused around the "processes and practices of writing, downplaying more product-oriented outcomes without abandoning them" (183).

A few key people who are discovering cool, new things around New Media Pedagogy...

David Silver

* Using 'thick tweets' meaning using all 140 characters to compel your reader to click on a link you include for further reading

* He also has his own grading criteria to help assess those kinds of assignments

Teaching Methods:

pinterest.com

* “New Media replace expertise with exploration & engagement”

* More than “teaching to the text”

* Critical to be up to date on the technology your students are engaging with

* “Ballenger’s Essay” (p 181) where he published an article of Storify that was a combination of tweets

How do we grade these kinds of assignments?

The National Writing Project's Multimodal Assessment Project has some ideas. They give 5 criteria that they "identify as 'domains that many felt were critical for assessing and improving our work as creators of multimodal texts'" (187). They are...

1. Context

2. Artifact

3. Process management

4. Substance/content

5. Habits of mind

In Class Activity:

Now that you've chosen your favorite social media platform...

Step 1: Write a tweet (140 characters max.) about how you could incorporate new media into your teaching.

Step 2: Okay, now take that "tweet" & utilize the 4 Icon Challenge we discussed earlier to compress your idea into 4 symbols/sketches/pictures.
