Gaia is the twin of Earth. Like most twins, on the surface, or at least at first glance, the two worlds are identical. Upon closer examination, however, the worlds are fundamentally different. Gaia is the province of magic and the arcane. Our folk lore and legend is their reality. Fairies, Imps, Griffins, Vampire, the Undead, Werewolves, Krakens and even Pixies are as common and every day as cats and dogs are for us. Witches and Wizards are seen as frequently as we see post officers or police. So find out today which nation in this alternative world you would do best to live in.

Don't be fooled; their homeland may have the same name, but the citizens of the Imperial Provinces on Gaia are nothing like the people of the United States on Earth.
Founded, following the Doom of London at the end of the Tudor Era, the Imperial Armies of the Emperor's have spread far and wide and conquered most of the known world. 
Their culture, or at least that of the ruling class, is obsessed with the lost glories from the Old World. Only in the Imperial Provinces will you find modern gallant Errant Knights, Jousting Dukes and Grand Tourneys. 
With every noble arming and maintaining their own armies, the Imperial Provinces have swept across all of the Americas, parts of West and North Europe, South Arica and most of the South Pacific. Few dare challenge the will of the Emperors and their legion of hardened Battle Mages.

The Imperial Provenience's of America.

Following the fall of the Tudor Empire, the British Isles fell into Anarchy and petty warring Nation States. Over time three Duchies formed, Oxford, Chelmsford and Cambridge. These Duchies ruled over all mainland Britain until the Autumn War of 1651, when the forces of Cambridge led by Generals Thomas Rainsborough and Oliver Cromwell conquered Oxford, capturing the Duchess of Oxford. 
Following their return to Cambridge, the Duke of Cambridge felt threatened by the War Hero's popularity and ordered the arrest of Thomas Rainsborough on trumped-up charges of treason. Following this Oliver Cromwell gathered the Scholars of the City and the people and they stormed the Constabulary Palace, freeing Rainsborough. The Scholar's Revolution ended with the imprisonment of the Duke of Cambridge and the founding of the Cambridge Republic. 
Now the Republic of Cambridge has spread it's influence over the whole of the British Isles and remains one of the few Democracies in a world of Imperial Superpowers. For the most part, the culture of the Republic is a culture of Trading and Learning. The Scholars who formed the Senate still hold some power and influence over the Government. It is the Merchant Princes and Nobles, however, who hold the most power with families almost inheriting Senate Seats. At present, the Republic is fighting a guerrilla war against Highland Rebels under the Banner of a Self-Proclaimed Scotish King. The soldiers of the Republic are struggling to spread peace and democracy at the end of a bayonet.

The Cambridge Republic.

United, multi-cultural and proud, the Ottoman Confederacy rules over the Middle East, Anatolia, Greece, Egypt and the East-Northern Half of Africa. Located in the centre of the world, the Ottoman Confederacy is the Trading Hub were almost all trade travels through between Europe and Asia. 
Made rich through the brilliance of its Parliament and strong by the determination of its Sultans, the Ottoman Confederacy is a modern superpower. 
With such a wealthy and varied group of cultures within its borders, the Ottoman Confederacy has embraced its peoples to its overall benefits. There, of course, is always those who long for independence and the Enlightenment of the Sultan's Court has not spread through all layers of the Confederacies society. 
There are also many treasures and wonders across the remote deserts of the Confederacy and many ancient powers hidden from view. Brave, foolish or perhaps both are those who dare explore the wilderness in this ancient land.

The Ottoman Confederacy.

Proud and old, the Empire of Prague considers itself to be the true inheritors of the Romans. They are the last nation to officially embrace the Cult of Rome, which now makes it's home in Prague, as the Imperial Provinces conquered Italy almost two hundred years ago. 
As such there are no Sorcerers, Witches or Mages in the Empire of Prague. The Roman Inquisition is ruthless in its hunting and burning of those born with the Arcane. Guided by the ancient laws of the Cult, the Inquisition and Cultist Council of Prophets are two of the most influential organisations in the Empire. 
Although officially the Caesar is the ruler of the Empire from the day of his election until his death, in truth it is the Eternal Prophet who rules the Empire. From the Celestial Throne within the Grand Temple, the laws of the Empire are decided and then sent to the Imperial Palace to be signed. 
Due to the lack of magic or any arcane devices in the Empire, the people long since turned to the expertise of the Inventors Guild. These brave men and women, who are often eyebrow-less, have created many of the wonders of the new steam-powered and clockwork age. The Empire of Prague has the largest military force in Europe; however, it is needed to patrol its long and mountainous borders keeping the balance of power in Europe. The Generals of the Empire are all from the old noble families, and what they lack in military experience they make up for in their willingness to send as many men to their deaths as need be.

The Moroccan Empire is the modern success story of north and central Africa. From humble beginnings in the coastal city-state of Rabat, the Moroccan spread their influence along the north coast and into mainland Spain more than eight hundred years ago. 
During the formation of the first Spanish Empire, the Moroccan's were pushed out, and for centuries they remained quiet and out of global affairs. It was during the mid-eighteen hundreds when the Imperial Provinces began their European Conquests, the new dynasty of Ziyad the Great came to power. 
Ziyad, like the Empire he would found, came from humble beginnings. The son of a goatherd, Ziyad listened to the call of the sea and became the most successful pirate of the age. His reputation and infamy grew so exalted the King of Rabat at the time offered Ziyad his only daughter's hand in marriage to buy his fleet as a protection force for Rabat's coastline. 
Now as a Prince, Ziyad waited as his brothers in law quietly died one by one, followed swiftly by his father in law. Then only twenty-one Ziyad became King with his beloved royal wife by his side. What followed is not understood due to conflicting records. In a relatively short time, the Morrocan's conquered Algeria, Tunisia, Mali, Mauritania and the Western Sahara (Ziyad's homeland). The birth of the Moroccan Empire saw the first of the African nations to use modern gunpowder weapons and so-called "European" styles of warfare and arcane battle magic. Ziyad never gave up his pirating and continued to sail the Atlantic Ocean and Mediteriean sea until his death on board his flagship when he was eighty-seven. Departing from this world the old King was followed by his great-grandson, King Ziyad the second. The line of the House of Ziyad still rules in Rabat, and now the Moroccan Empire's borders cover the whole of west north and west central Africa, from the Congo in the south to Tunisia in the north and Gambia in the west.

One of the strangest and most mysterious nations on Gaia, the Samarkand Dominion is ruled over by Sorcerers. The country, on the whole, has the highest concentration of Sorcerers in the world. Those without Magic are little more than Surfs, divided into Farmers, Builders, Warriors and Servants. 
Samarkand itself is a floating city, kept in the clouds by the power of its Mages. From the glittering towers, those Arcane of Samarkand tinker and dabble with the Void and all manner of Magical devices. Samarkand, on the whole, is an ancient city and should have long since crumbled but has remained intact by the will of its ambiguous leader, the Archon Celeste. 
With its borders closed to the majority of trade and diplomacy with other nations, the Samarkand Dominion has mainly been left behind by the development of technology in the rest of the world. Its legendary wealth, however, has attracted thieves from across the globe. None of which have ever returned to tell their tales.

Following the collapse of the Mughal Empire in the late seventeen hundreds, the Kingdom of Maratha grew from its central Indian homeland. Using diplomacy and trade, the Merchant Princes and Nobles of Maratha spread their influence outward. The Kingdom became the trading hub of the Indian subcontinent and was consider the centre and focal point of Indian culture. 
However, for a long time, India remained divided into hundreds of small and petty Kingdoms. Although Maratha expanded its borders and remained the richest, largest and strongest nation, India for a long time remained relatively unchanged and stable. 
For a century, India remained at a state of relative peace with only a few border disputes between the smaller Kingdoms. Then everything changed when the Qing Empire attacked. Invading from the north east the Imperial Dragon Army of the Qing was able to strike quickly and conquer a lot of territory within a short period. Unprepared the Kingdoms of India collapsed quickly. Then the King of Maharastra, Prewjal the Just, called his forces. He marched forth uniting all the other Kings behind his banner. What followed was a long and bloody war lasting two decades and costing the lives of millions. By the end of it, the Qing army was pushed out of India. At the end of the war, the small Kingdoms of India united into the Kingdom of Maharastra which covered the whole subcontinent. Fortresses were built along the Himalayas and a wall built from Changlang to the south coast of Bruma. Collectively the fortifications and wall have become known as the Great Wall of India.

Legend has it the islands of Japan were formed from the skeleton of a Celestial Dragon who fell to Gaia and died after fighting with the sun. It is said the Dragon's bones were iron; its veins were gold, and its heart was a ruby the size of a mountain. 
Whether this is true or not, the fact cannot be denied Japan is one of the most mineral and resource rich nations. The steel of Japanese blacksmiths is legendary. The blade crafted on the islands can slice through almost anything, never need to be sharpened, and that is before they are enhanced by magic. 
For a long time, Japan was ruled by the Emperors, who struggled to control the regional warlords. This changed when Clan Minamoto won the last Clan War, also known as the War of the Falcon. The Emperor made Minamoto Hotura the first Shogun. For two hundred years the Emperors and Shoguns ruled side by side from Kyoto and Edo. However, the Emperors grew jealous of the wealth and power of the Shoguns. The civil war which followed is known to the Japanese as the Dawn War, for by its end the Shogun was the sole ruler of Japan, the office of Emperor was abolished, and the Shogunate of the Blazing Sun was born. Under the rule of the Shogun's the Shogunate has gone through a series of modernisation and expansion. Now ruling all of Indo-China and the Philippines as well as Korea, the Shogunate of the Blazing Sun has remained strong, wealthy and culturally distinct to the rest of the world.

The Empire of the Sun Throne is currently a broken nation. The Tsars of the Romanov line had ruled over and expanded the Empire for three hundred years. Ruling the cold north, the Romanov's made Russia warm and fertile after the discovery of the Atlantian artefact known as the Sun Throne. 
With the power of the Sun Throne, the Tsar's brought an era of peace and prosperity to their Empire and so renamed it the Empire of the Sun Throne. Travellers from far and wide would come to gaze on the wonder of the Sun Throne. With the control of the Throne, the Tsar's were able to feed their people and burn away invading armies. 
However, the peace was not to last. In the early nineteen hundreds, the sorcerer Rasputin was banished from the Imperial Court after an affair with the Tsarina.
Filled with hatred for the Tsar, Rasputin used forbidden necromancy to bring back to life Ivan the Terrible. What Rasputin hoped to achieve is unknown, but the wraith of the infamous Grand Prince possessed Rasputin's body. Back from the void, Ivan was more Terrible than ever. Gathering an army of the undead, the exiled, and ambitious mages, Ivan attacked the Imperial Court. Most of the Romanov line was wiped out. A surviving branch of the Romanov line fled to Japan, leaving Ivan as the Tsar of all the Russias. However, the Sun Throne would not work for him, and once he sat upon it, the Empire was covered in ice and froze. Russia has closed its borders ever since, leaving the rest of the world in the dark to what happens within its frozen realm. About five years ago, though, Prince Nicolia 'Eastern Sword' last of the House of Romanov returned to his families homeland with an army of Samurai, Exiled Russians and Mercenaries. With his army he was able to take back Moscow, only to find the Sun Throne was gone. Now the east and west of Russia fight in a civil war of the living against the dead.

The oldest nation on Gaia to still exist, the Qing Empire rules over all of, what we know as, China. From the Forbidden City in Bejing the Emperors and Emperesses of the Qing rule all under heaven with a mandate from the Creator. 
The Qing Empire has hardly changed in the last thousand years. It refuses the modern technologies of the west and has devoted itself to the spiritual and arcane. The majority of their army may still use swords, crossbows, catapults and early cannons, but the Empire's Dragon Air Force more than makes up for their lack of modern weapons. 
The most important part of the Empire's military structure, the Dragon Riders have bred the perfect killing machines. No army dares to invade the lands of the Middle Kingdom with the dragons in the skies. With this being the case, the Qing Empire has remained relatively undisturbed for the last two hundred years. 
 
Within the Qing Empire, the Scholars held the most power as a collective class. They ran everything from tax collection to the distribution of food. A student would have to go through ten years of study and training, and five examinations before becoming a full Scholar. In the present day, the Empress Wanrong rules the Empire since the death of her husband and during the childhood of her only son. She has led the nation through an era of crisis following two rebellions and serial assassination attempts. The Empress is said to be as ruthless as she is beautiful and is widely considered the greatest ruler in China's history.

The Qing Empire.

From the floating city at the north end of the Adriatic Sea, the Empire of Venice has controlled a small area of Europe and a vast trading network of shipping. Known as the bankers of Europe and the Imperial Provinces within Europe, the society of Venice has become somewhat strange to outsiders in recent centuries. 
What began as a custom of wearing masks only on festivals has evolved over the years. Now members of the Venitian elite and Merchant families do not show any skin in public. They wear highly decorative masks and fabulously colourful costumes all year round. Each suit and mask are individual to the owner, and it is a crime punishable by death to wear the mask of the costume of another. 
 
The Doge is the ruler of Venice for life once elected by the Pregadi, who are made up of the heads of the forty most influential Merchant Families in the Venice. Once elected, the Doge has complete authority over the government of the Venice. However, he can be removed from office by a vote from the Pregadi, though this has never happened. In most cases, an unpopular or unwise Doge is quickly assassinated. In recent history, Venice has held an uneasy peace with the Imperial Provinces who control most of Italy. Placed directly between the Ottoman Confederacy, Empire of Prague and Imperial Provinces of America, Venice has often been the peacemaker, if only to ensure continued trade and to stop the armies of other nations marching through their land.
