Syria has been embroiled in a civil war for the past 6 years. An estimated 500,000 people have been killed in the fighting and millions more have fled the country as refugees. This crisis has come to a head in the past few days. Al Assad’s forces, with Russian support, are moving in on Aleppo, they are killing civilians as they go. Here are three organizations that are working on the ground in Aleppo and need your financial support.

1. ​Action 1: Give to The White Helmets (charity navigator score: NA)

The White Helmets are the front line of emergency services in Aleppo. They report having saved more than 70,000 lives. They are comprised primarily of Syrian locals and have been working in Aleppo for 5 years. While many NGO’s have been forced to leave Aleppo in recent days, due to increases in airstrikes, the White Helmets have stayed to provide emergency care and aid evacuation efforts. 141 White Helmet volunteers have been killed in the past 5 years. The organization has seen some controversy related to concerns around their political affiliation, but the fact remains that the White Helmets are among the most effective and efficient relief organizations working in Syria today, and they deserve, and need, your financial support. ​​

Doctors Without Borders has provided medical care to Syrians since the war began. If you are so inclined, you can designate your donation to specifically go to their work in Syria, rather than be distributed across the 60 countries they work in. They also have resources on how to fund raise in your community, if you want to go beyond direct giving.

3. Action 3: Give to The International Rescue Committee (Charity Navigator Score: 91.16)

Aleppo is in the process of being evacuated, and residents are being relocated to refugee camps across Europe and the Middle East. The International Rescue Committee works to provide economic support, education, health care, and advocacy services for these refugees. They are currently providing emergency food, water, and blankets to refugees fleeing the area. These are just three ways to support the people of Aleppo. There are dozens of other NGO’s working in Syria right now. If you are unable to provide financial support you can also call your congress person and ask that they support the Caesar Bill, which will sanction governments who have contributed to the crisis.
