What Life After College Has Taught Me!

What to expect post grad life and into the workforce!

It's Graduation Season!

It's May, which means graduation season! CONGRATULATIONS! You are probably excited and yet conflicted about what is to come. You are going to be done with the long term papers, sleepless study sessions, and smelly dorm rooms. But at the same time, you are probably sad to see it all go away. But, now you must be wondering what is to come?

I'll wait...3...2...1...

Oh, shit, I need a job!

Yupp! That's right! It's time to enter into the workforce with the expensive piece of paper that you've been working towards to for the last 4 or more years! You might be thinking "Oh, I need an extra internship. Fast!" "Everyone else has a job after this, but not me."

OR You might be like, "Oh, it's over? I'm still not sure what I want to do."

Well, whatever emotions/feelings you are going through, RELAX!

After coming out of college, I wasn't really sure either what I studied was what I wanted to do. I thought about the classes I took, the internships, and the friendship's I've made and thought long and hard about what I should do next.

As I took on the job hunting full on, I also remembered that I wanted to continue screen writing. This allowed me to focus on an interest and work towards something as I wait patiently for a response.

The Waiting Game!

I'm not going to lie to you, so listen carefully. Come closer, a little more. It's going to be a while. And I know for others; especially those who've gone to NYU, Columbia, USC, the other IV Leagues, or any other well known school out there who got a job immediately, but for most of us its going to be a while.

TAKE A SUMMER INTERNSHIP. YES, IT'S OKAY!

Surprisingly, I found internships in my field wanting recent graduates. I know you must be thinking, "Another internship?" Any type of experience that you can get, can help with the next opportunity.

During the summer, my friend asked me to help him with a documentary project. This was an opportunity that I was excited about. Going into interviews, many interviewees were impressed by my independent ability to create. I also continued my interests in writing; both in scripts and forums like this one.

SO WHAT DID I LEARN?

With all being said above, I learned one thing. And that is TAKE CHANCES! It's okay that you do not have the perfect job or even a job. You don't even have to get a job that's based on what you study. College to me was a way to discover my true interests.

Talk to your friends, family members, your neighbors, bus driver, etc. Basically, ANYONE! You would be surprised to see how exciting your summer will be! Looking back, and writing about this now, I'm am happy that I did not get a job right out of college.

I learned and grew so much from life after college. I made new experiences and found a more clearer path to goals that I would like to accomplish. I hope reading this inspires you recent grads to go out their and make memories and TAKE CHANCES! I promise you that life after college is going to be a transformative one!
