Some Great Spots In London For Restless Nomadic Workers Like Me

Who likes working cooped-up in a hotel room? Getting out into a city's vibe is much more fun. Here are some spots in London for people not bound to the office.

A Change (in Scenery) is as Good as a Holiday

When I’m traveling and need to do some work, there’s nothing worse than being stuck in a hotel room, alone, tapping away at the keyboard. What’s the point of being in a different city when you can’t take in the sights and sounds and meet some interesting people along the way? I love working in public spaces where I can mix business and pleasure while I get a much-needed change in scenery. Here are some of my favorites when I visit London.

Timberyard (TYUK)

Whether you need a mountain of cake to fuel your workday or a couple of cups of expertly crafted coffee, Timberyard will serve it to you with a smile. This popular social hub stretches over two floors and is geared for the contemporary worker. In addition to a mouth-watering menu, the space offers plenty of electrical sockets and an energetic buzz. It can get a bit crowded, but the friendly service more than makes up for waiting a few minutes extra for your second (thoroughly delicious) flat white. Also, I could’ve sworn I once saw Mark Zuckerberg there.

The Ace Hotel Lobby

The large lobby of the Ace Hotel offers an eclectic mix of open and partitioned workspaces and an equally diverse range of visitors. It’s always a treat to have a little break to swap stories with a fellow flexible worker. This is probably one of the most comfortable spaces to work in London. It has a steady ebb and flow of visitors throughout the day and only really gets hectic late at night when the bar starts getting lively. An added bonus is that it’s open 24 hours a day. The coffee is decent enough to get you going and the delicious cocktails will help you unwind after a busy day in spectacular style. I highly recommend taking in the stunning view of Shoreditch from the rooftop bar and terrace.

Second Home Spitalfields

If you are looking for a workspace you can call home without having to commit to setting up your own office with a long lease, this is it. Second Home Spitalfields is a futuristic space that offers a range of affordable options to workers on the move. Also included in the fees are wellness activities like yoga, lunchtime runs, and meditation classes. Not to mention unlimited free filter coffee and organic teas, showers with fresh towels, and a range of educational workshops and talks. This space really makes you feel like you’re part of a community.

Public is the Way to Go

Are you a freelancer getting cabin fever? A Startup on a tight budget? Or simply somebody who sometimes works away from the office, as I do. From cozy cafés to quirky co-working spaces, there are plenty of options out there. The flexibility and freedom of not being office-bound is awesome and even better if you can mix it up by changing your scenery (and get a decent cup of coffee!).
