London's Pubs Are Calling, Especially After a Hard Day's Work

Londoners loves going to pubs and I love London. So, I love going to pubs. There really is nothing like a good one after work. Check out a few of my favorites.

London Pubs That I Love

William Butler Yeats once said: “There are no strangers here; only friends you haven’t yet met." I think he may have been talking about English pubs. Stepping into a London pub after a hard day of work kind of feels like coming home. In England, just about everybody goes to pubs, nearly every day. Whether you’re in Soho, Shooters Hill, Spitalfields, or St James, there is a "local" or five in every town. Here are my top five favorite London pubs, in no particular order:

Ace Hotel, Shoreditch

Because I often spend the day doing work in the lobby of the Ace Hotel, it is super convenient to grab a couple of drinks and maybe a bite to eat at the bar at the end of the day. With an excellent selection of beers and ales and an open terrace with a stunning view of Shoreditch, it’s a great place to relax. There is also a lot going on at the hotel’s underground venue, Miranda. From comedy shows to raves, if you are looking for a fun night out, this is a great option.

Eve Bar, Covent Garden

The neon sign cleverly says, "resist EVErything but temptation" and truth be told, after doing some writing over my flat white at Timberyard, I have a hard time resisting the short walk over here. The interior is dark and moody, but don’t let that fool you—Eve Bar is anything but that. The drinks menu is a fun adventure itself – where else have you had a cocktail served with a tiny toffee apple on the side? Even if you’re more of a beer or wine person, you should try at least one or two cocktails at Eve Bar. Their version of a Porn Star Martini swaps the usual vodka for whiskey, and instead of a shot of prosecco, they add a Champagne ice lollipop which fizzes and pops open when it hits the drink!

Pride of Spitalfields, Spitalfields

If you want to experience a "typical" British pub, this is it. The Pride of Spitalfields not only has an old-fashioned pressed ceiling, but also lush burgundy carpets giving it that typical snug feeling I’ve always enjoyed in traditional pubs. Apparently, it’s been around since the mid-19th century and the locals will tell you how one of the men suspected of being Jack the Ripper used to drink there. And after doing some work at Second Home Spitalfields, this place is right in the area.

The Harp, Covent Garden

All kinds of ales on tap along with a selection of delicious sausages make The Harp, also in Covent Garden like Eve Bar, the ideal spot to unwind if you are looking for comfort food in a chill atmosphere. As you approach The Harp, you’re met with stunning flower boxes and stained-glass windows. Inside, the walls are covered in old-fashioned art giving it a home-like atmosphere even though it’s a busy place. Expect to encounter your fair share of friendly locals happy to have a chat over a drink or two.

Wolfie’s, Hackney

Believe it or not, this pub is a private hairdresser by day—only for VIPs, mind you. At night, the salon chairs are moved and the former garage is transformed into a stylish pub. They have a decent selection of wines at reasonable prices and some delicious tapas-style snacks. Try the "skagen" (Finnish prawns on toast). Be prepared though, the place is TINY and only open from Thursday to Saturday evenings. There are less than 20 seats and everybody knows everybody.
