19 "Sex And The City" Moments That Prove Miranda Was Kind Of Always The Worst

"If a man's over 30 and single, there's something wrong with him."

Miranda Hobbes has become something of a villain over the past couple of months.

People are really not loving who Miranda has become in the years between Sex and the City and And Just Like That.

To be honest, though, it surprises me that so many people don't love the turn the character took.

To be clear, I'm not pro-Miranda (though before I start tearing into her I will concede that she has her positive moments, such as being a good friend when she's not being a terrible friend). I just think that, if you look back over the six seasons of Sex and the City, all signs point to Miranda always having been kind of the worst.

Here are some of her not-so-finest moments from Sex and the City (and a few from And Just Like That... just to really drive things home):

1. When she’s judgmental of other women.

This is a big one, and it happens constantly. She spends the second episode of the first season largely complaining about supermodels and how they don’t eat enough. She spends another episode ragging on women with kids.

Basically, she looks down on anyone who doesn't have a lifestyle similar or comparable to hers.

2. When she lets her boss think she’s gay to advance her career.

Eventually, she sets him straight (no pun intended), but the fact that she even lets it get as far as it does is kind of gross.

3. When she’s mean to Skipper.

This happens a lot, and for no real reason. She tries to ghost him, and gives her friends a “Can you believe this guy?” look when he’s basically just existing. You can chalk it up to Miranda just being Miranda — it’s not like she’s not mean to literally everyone else — but it's wholly unnecessary.

4. When she's only really interested in Skipper after she thinks he’s moved on.

Like 20 minutes after seeing him with his new girlfriend, she gives him a call, because all of a sudden he's all unavailable and thus desirable. (This is also far from one of Skipper's best moments, considering the moment Miranda calls he breaks up with his new girlfriend — who he's literally still inside of.)

5. She snoops through a date’s belongings and is horrified by what she finds.

After sleeping over at a guy’s house, he tells her to go ahead and chill at his apartment (I will never understand why people do this), and she immediately proceeds to go through all his shit (this is why I will never understand why people do this).

She ends up finding a tape of a man being spanked, and, presumably after recovering from a case of the vapors, steals the tape so she can show it to Carrie and talk about what a freak the guy is.

Oh, and for good measure, she acts like the guy is a weirdo again when he doesn't react the way she wants after she slaps his butt in the middle of the street with a coy little smile and quip to alert him to the fact that she went through all his shit and found his porn.

6. When she's kind of terrible to animals.

In what's supposed to be a comforting moment to Carrie, Miranda tells her that she put a rubber band around her childhood dog's snout, which, okay, I get that kids do crappy things, but what??

She also, at one point, overfeeds her cat because she's afraid he'll eat her face when she dies, and she even locks the poor thing in the kitchen for two days. As someone who also lives alone, I personally hope my cats eat me if I die, because I hate the thought of them going hungry. So what if I can't have an open casket? I want to be cremated anyway.

7. When she said single men over 30 are undateable, but single women over 30 are just "choosy".

There are like a million things wrong with men, but being single over the age of 30 is not one of them.

8. When she blows up at her friends for only talking about guys.

She actually makes a really good point — it's rare that any of their conversations pass the Bechdel test. The issue is that the only reason she gets angry is she's not having any guy problems at the moment. Once she is, she's right back on the same page, more than happy to talk about why men and dating are so terrible.

9. When she's rude to service staff.

She meets her future husband Steve at a bar, where she requests another glass of wine (though "requests" might be too polite).

There's no "excuse me" and no "please" — something he calls her out for. Instead of acknowledging the fact that yes, she should indeed have said please, she gets all snotty and asks if he's "allowed" to talk to her like that.

Frankly, rewatching the interaction makes me wonder why Steve felt the desire to flirt with her, but it takes all kinds, I guess.

There's another time when she's all set to yell at a Chinese restaurant worker because she's projecting her own insecurities about her lifestyle. Fortunately, she realizes the woman just likes to laugh before she can go full-blown Karen, but it's just another example of her being disrespectful to people in service roles.

10. When she's an asshole to Steve in front of her friends literally the first time they all meet.

He makes a funny little joke about bartenders being good at getting drinks and her reaction is so rude and crass not even Samantha cracks a smile.

11. When she dates a single dad even though she doesn't really seem to like kids.

She also refers to dating a divorced guy with a kid as being like "chewing someone else's gum." First of all, yikes. Second of all, why would you bother dating someone if that's how you feel about them?

I don't want to have kids, but I also don't want to raise kids. I'm not interested in being anyone's stepmom or guardian, so I just don't date people who have children. Easy peasy!

12. When she's furious about being sexually harassed by a sandwich...until she realizes he might be a sexy sandwich.

You can't have it both ways, Miranda! It's still sexual harassment even if the guy is hot!

13. When her friend hands her a baby and she almost lets him fall off the couch.

At her baby shower, one of her coworkers gets up to use the bathroom and hands Miranda her baby. Granted, Miranda did not ask to be handed this baby, but setting him down on the couch next to her so she can open more gifts and then letting him almost fall? Not great! Especially when literally the night before she'd admitted to Carrie that the exact same thing happened with her niece when she was a teen.

14. When she tells Big he and Carrie are "crazy" to get married THE NIGHT BEFORE THEIR WEDDING.

I know emotions were running high, but all she had to do was say literally anything else. Hell, she could've had Samantha tell Steve to go and avoided the fight in the first place. (And no, I'm not excusing Big's actions, but even if he didn't let Miranda's words get to him, it still would've been super messed up.)

The icing on the cake is that Miranda lets Carrie spend almost half a year trying to figure out what she did to drive Big away.

15. When she's racist.

While looking for apartments in Chinatown, the "new up-and-coming neighborhood" Miranda spots what she's looking for: a white person! Because she's more than happy to move to Chinatown, as long as there aren't too many Chinese people.

16. When she becomes a ~white ally~.

Watching her overcompensate for being white and fumbling through basic human interactions with her Black professor is just...I'm not sure "cringe" is strong enough a word.

17. When she gets high (and fingered) while she's supposed to be on Carrie-watch.

It literally leads to Carrie peeing her bed, so I hope Miranda at least ended up springing for a new mattress.

18. When she cheats on Steve despite knowing how crappy it feels to get cheated on.

I personally make it known to people I'm dating that if they really want to sleep with someone else that bad, they either need to break up with me or tell me first so I can decide if it's something I'd be okay with.

Miranda is furious when Steve cheats on her, which is perfectly reasonable, but then she goes out and does the same thing. I guess it's okay for her to do it because she's now over the marriage?

19. When she does the exact same thing she gave Carrie major shit for 20 years earlier.

One of Miranda and Carrie's biggest fights is about Carrie deciding to quit her job and move to Paris with Aleksandr. Miranda chastizes Carrie for essentially giving up her own life and putting her boyfriend first.

Cut to the season finale of And Just Like That..., when Miranda decides to...give up her own life and move to Los Angeles with Che. Considering how she and Carrie are essentially having the same fight over again, it's unreal to me that Carrie lasts that whole conversation without hrowing the whole Paris thing in Miranda's face.
