You sweat profusely and hope they call you back.

In my many years in business, I’ve noticed some similarities between the world of dating and the world of job interviewing. There are indeed some interesting affinities between the infamous first date and in-person interview.

Your dating profile is like your resume. You post it online, and if they like what they see, it’s time to meet in person.

The “What Do I Wear” Issue.

Sometimes, we’re so caught up in our appearances, we end up late to stuff (important stuff). We ask ourselves, Is this too casual? Too dressy? Should I go with trendy? Classic? Business chic? Aaaaaand you should've left 10 minutes ago.

You Watch What You Eat or Drink Before.

Whether it means we didn’t get enough sleep or we had too much caffeine, it’s important to watch what we take in before a high-pressure situation--like a date or an interview. We don’t want to exacerbate our nerves with a shot of espresso, nor do we want our waistbands squeezing us while we're trying to list our strengths.

You Stress About Getting There On Time.

There’s no denying it. Social Media makes our lives an open book, and just like a person anticipates a first date by exploring someone’s online presence, so do they for the company they’re interviewing for. I mean, if you don’t look up your potential workplace, something’s wrong.

You Play 20 Questions.

Although it can be fun in the date setting, this game can be stressful in an interview setting, where it’s mostly one-sided.

You Keep Checking Your Phone After.

Have they called? Did you get an email? Text? We’re all privy to the anxious wait.

You Risk Rejection.

Dating and job hunting are vulnerable processes. In each one, you risk being judged or feeling like you’re not good enough. You’re in a pool of other fish, and you’re constantly wondering, Am I the right one? But ask yourself this: Are they right for me?
