Hidilyn Diaz, Weightlifter, Wins The First Gold Medal For Philippines In All Of Olympic History

For the first time, the flag of the Philippines was raised the highest at the Olympic Games.

"History has been made" is a statement that feels too small for this particular 2020 Summer Olympics moment, and that moment involves Philippines weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz.

Diaz, an Airwoman Sargent for the Philippine Air Force, just won gold in the women's 55kg weightlifting competition, earning the first gold medal EVER for the Philippines.

She set the Olympic Record for Women's 55kg by hoisting a combined weight of 224kg over her head — that's a 121-pound person lifting a total of 494 pounds over their head in the competition.
