As the TikTok above shows, soda shops sell "dirty sodas," which are basically just sodas with flavored syrups and milk added in. "A lot of people don't drink coffee or alcohol, so we have soda shops everywhere," user @brooke_lynnmilne said in the clip.
Recently, hundreds of Utahns have been sharing their go-to soda shop orders, and everyone seems to love "Dirty Diet Coke" — a drink made from Diet Coke, coconut coffee creamer, and lime juice.
I know what you're thinking — and you're not the only one. The drink has baffled everyone on TikTok, but it is apparently a very popular drink in the state. "If you're from Utah, [Dirty Diet Coke] is like as common as drinking water," user @toponlinefinds said in the clip above.
Another person shared a clip of their Dirty Diet Coke recipe, offering similar sentiments to the users in the clips above. "If you're from Utah, you would not be surprised by the things I put in my Diet Coke at all," user @hunterkailey said in the clip. "I would say like 70 percent of Utah has a soda addiction including myself, because we have all these really fun drink places around us where they put a bunch of add-ins in the drinks."
Since the people of Utah are raving about this drink, I decided I needed to give it a try. As a Diet Coke loyalist, I knew I would be qualified to judge the beverage. Here's how I made it:
I found this recipe for Dirty Diet Coke, which calls for Diet Coke, coconut syrup, half and half, lime juice, and crushed ice. Buuuttttt most of these girls on TikTok were using coconut creamer in place of the half and half and coconut syrup, so I figured that would be better for the taste test.
First things first, I poured the entire bottle of coke into my crushed ice — it was 12 ounces, to be exact.
Following the recipe, I added in 2 tablespoons of the coconut creamer.
For the final touch, I squeezed in half of a lime.
The color was a very light tan, and the bubbles from the carbonation were coming up to the top. I honestly did not know what to expect from it.
I took a few sips, and was actually pleasantly surprised. I was definitely expecting it to be grosser. Here's my honest review:
If you like sugary drinks, you'll probably really like this. It reminds me a bit of Cherry Coke in the sense that it has that "artificial" sweet flavor. If you've ever had Shaved Ice or a snowcone, this drink tastes exactly like the concoction you get once all the ice melts and the fruity syrups mix together. The flavors are definitely confusing at first, and there is a lot going on with the carbonation, but it does taste kind of like candy. That being said, it is very sweet, so I can't see myself being able to drink this all the time.
