Just 32 Cold-Weather Products You Didn’t Know You Needed For Your Pets

Like protective paw wax, a heated water bowl, and a light-up collar to keep your dog safe on dark, snowy walks.

    1. An Aspen self-warming bed so you won't have to worry about your furry family members staying warm indoors (especially if you're trying to conserve energy). Aside from just being irresistibly cozy and the perfect shape, this smartly designed bed uses their own body heat and reflects it so they have a toasty place to nap at all times — including when you're not home to cuddle them.

This is THE pet bed, y'all. I can personally vouch for it for cats, though plenty of reviewers have shared pics of their adorable dogs curled up in it too (it comes in larger sizes)! Neither of my cats have ever really taken to a cat bed and much preferred to doze on their cat tree or curl up on a regular blanket — until I finally caved in and bought the Aspen self-warming bed a while back. IMMEDIATELY upon placing it on my couch, one of my cats crawled into it and happily began napping. As soon as he moved away, my other cat jumped in to take it for a test run as well — and immediately curled up as well. After about a week of them taking turns using it (literally, the cat *not* in the bed would lay next to it waiting for the other to leave — my polite boys 🥹), I realized I needed to buy a second one. They immediately took to that one as well, and now, they both have access to their favorite bed whenever they like!

Promising review: "We are big fans of this bed. Bruce, a very tall and handsome kitty, has dibs on this one — so it’s a good thing there’s another one for his brother Egon. It’s big enough for a bigger-butted cat and fluffy and well made, and the self-heating panel means I don’t feel guilty for keeping the thermostat at 65." —tbinkc

Get it from Amazon for $23.88 (also available in larger sizes and a blue color).

    2. And a simple but effective heating pad for pets who prefer to curl up on their favorite blanket. You can slide this underneath a towel or blanket to heat up their nap spot!

    Jenae Sitzes / BuzzFeed

Pro tip: Check your pet's extremities (ears, toes, etc.) to feel if they're chilly! In general, if you're feeling cold, chances are they are, too.

I've used this exact heating pad since 2018 and it's still going strong. I break it out every winter because in my NYC apartment, I'm at the whim of my landlord, who's in charge of turning on the heat when it's legally required — and even when the heat is on, my window insulation isn't the best and it can stay pretty chilly. I slide this heating pad under a blanket (rather than having my cats sleep on it directly) — the temp isn't supposed to be high enough to burn them, but I worry about it all the same, and putting a blanket on top makes it cozier for them anyway. Let me tell you: THEY LOVE THIS THING. Once it heats up, I'll look over to see whichever cat has claimed it totally sprawled out with the biggest look of contentment on his face. It makes me feel so much better knowing they're not cold, especially on sub-freezing winter nights.

Promising review: "My senior cat had recently taken to sleeping on the DVR to keep warm. This heating pad was the best solution for us both! She loves it! The low heat setting is perfect for keeping her petite body comfortably warm!" —Susan Hackett

    3. A pair of waterproof dog shoes that'll let your pupper stomp around in wintry weather without risk of frostbite or cuts on their feet from ice and salt. On rainy days, it'll keep their paws dry, too.

Promising review: "Awesome booties. These babies stay on. She runs, jumps and does everything she normally does, except she can't scratch if needed. (Just gonna have to wait, that's all.) Live in the northwest 'burbs of Chicago, and we walk a couple of miles a day. Our neighborhood has no sidewalks. When it sleets or snows, road salt is an issue. As most dogs do, she likes to off-road it, so it's in the snow, on the street, repeat. These keep her paws from getting packed up with snow and salt. Initially, it's kind of a hassle getting them on, but it gets easier. If you buy them, put them on your dog in the house and let figure them out. And strap 'em down good." —earshplitten

Get them in a pack of four from Amazon for $28.99  (available in six colors and eight sizes).

    4. Or a stylish pair of RifRuf dog booties so your pup can strut around like they're on a catwalk (er, dogwalk?) — but these are as practical as they are cute! They're made from the same materials as human sneakers (because your pet deserves a real pair of shoes too), with a durable rubber sole, breathable mesh upper, and adjustable straps.

If you have a dog with bigger front paws, you can get split sizes (denoted with "/") so they'll get two shoes in each size.

RifRuf is an Asian-owned small business that's creating design-driven dog shoes. The idea for the shoes was developed when one of the co-owner's dogs kept getting irritated paws while living in New York, and they wanted a pair of shoes that met their high expectations for paw protection and style.

Promising review: "I love these shoes, my pup doesn't have any issues running, walking or jumping. They are of great quality and really sturdy. Easy to clean, well put together, and a great-looking shoe." —Maria

Get a set of four Caesar 1 dog booties from RifRuf for $75 (available in seven sizes and five colors). There's a handy tool on the listing to calculate your pup's shoe size!

    5. And for dogs who refuse to wear shoes: Musher's Secret paw wax, an ointment to soothe and soften their dry, cracked paws after wintry adventures. It contains an all-natural blend of waxes and oils with vitamin E to create a protective barrier against sand, ice, hot pavement, and other outdoor conditions.

If you're worried about finding little paw prints all over your carpeting, don't worry, it's stain free. 🐾

Promising review: "I used to live in upper Michigan and used Mushers Secret regularly for my dogs. I bought some a while back though I live in Louisiana now because it blocks the ice and heat well. It also blocks salt from the dog pads. Love this stuff. Recently went to Washington to visit my sister and it was icy and it helped Charlie with his tiny paws. My mom just got a new puppy recently and she lives in Germany. She got a little pug. She was really concerned about her paws getting hurt from the snow, ice and salt. I bought her this product to put in her package as part of her new puppy gifts. This product really works. Just rub a bit into the paws. Wash it off when you get home if need be. I totally recommend this product and have been using it forever. Most dogs don't like wearing boots and this is the way to go. I had a lot of sled dog friends in Michigan and they are the once that got me to try it. I am glad they did." —K9rotehexe

    6. heated water bowl designed to prevent water from freezing in low temps so outdoor pets can ~hydrate~ (before they bolt back into their dog or kitty house). Your local birds and squirrels will likely enjoy it too!

Promising review: "I purchased this to use in an unheated shed for our 13-year-old outdoor cat. I would prefer if the cat would come into the house, but she's always been a 'barn cat' and refuses to stay indoors. She does, however, enjoy the shed with the special small flap door that only she can fit through. She's got an insulated Kitty Tube with special heating pad to sleep in, and this water dish was the perfect solution for keeping her hydrated without worrying about the water freezing. Our kitty drinks LOTS of water and loves this dish. Safe, economical and does the job for us." —Honest Reviewer

    7. A humidifier, because you're not the only one who struggles when humidity levels drop — cold, dry air can wreak havoc on pets' nose, skin, and fur. Reviewers also note it seems to help with their animals' breathing and allergies.

BuzzFeed Shopping editor Melanie Aman says, "I have this baby at home (though my apartment is currently pet-less), and I love it. It has two strength settings and then you can opt to have the light on or off. I like to use it while I sleep so I wake up the next morning and I don't feel like it's a desert up in my nose. Another plus is that it's practically silent and has never kept me up due to noise."

Promising review: "My poor old dog has developed breathing problems and when the polar vortex sucked all the moisture out of the air, her cough got really bad. This has definitely helped her breathe easier during these dry times. As for the humidifier itself, it's super quiet, easy to use, and also works as a great night light!" —K. Williams

Get it from Amazon for $29.98+ (available in three sizes).

    8. And a bottle of Burt's Bees dander-reducing spray if your precious feline bb has more flakes on their coat than a snowy day in Alaska — and in the winter, their dry skin makes it even worse. This contains nourishing colloidal oat flour and aloe vera for a deep-conditioning treatment that'll have you running your hand through their silky, shiny, dander-free coat in amazement.

You can spray this on a brush before brushing their fur!

Promising review: "Oh my goodness! My 20-something-pound ragdoll isn't necessarily fat, but he's huge! He has trouble grooming his back, and it tends to build up dander flakes and just get a greasy look to it. I've been using this spray a few times a week, brushing it through and getting as much loose hair out as I can. His fur is shiny, soft and has significantly less dander! I'm so pleased. The spray dries quickly as you brush it through. I love this stuff!" —Kayla A.

Get it from Amazon for $10.96 (also available as wipes).

    9. An LED collar for those inevitable nighttime walks (and since it gets dark at 4 p.m. now) to help keep your dog safe and visible to traffic — especially if they have black fur. It also helps you more easily locate them in the dark if they're not on a leash.

Promising reviews: "Fantastic buy for my black Lab! I can find and see her anywhere. One of the best things I have ever bought for her. I take her running at night quite often and it is perfect. It is very easy to recharge as well. Extremely happy I bought it for her! I wish I had done so years ago!" —Mn greeneyes

"I initially bought a couple of collars because I live on 5 acres and my older dog cannot hear when I call him and I needed a way to find him in the dark. I ended up buying enough for all four of my dogs because it was so much fun to watch them all over and find them easily at night if they were far from the house. We have a blind 5-year-old Australian Shepherd who wears his (green) collar almost every time he goes out and it is no exaggeration to say this collar saved his life when he fell in our icy pond two days ago. Without this collar we would have lost our sweet boy and may never have found his little body. In addition to saving my drowning dog, months ago I found my smaller dog on the highway outside our fence at 5 in the morning in dark because his blinking red collar. I guess I can say it saved one and may have saved another of my dogs." —Will

Get it from Amazon for $15.99+ (available in sizes XS–L and 12 colors).

    10. A snout soother so you can moisturize that snout when it gets chapped and crusty. This vegan, organic balm stick will heal your pupper's nose and leave it as buttery soft (and perfectly boop-able) as it was before.

reviewer showing their dog with a crusty nose
same reviewer showing their dog's nose completely smooth and healed after using the snout soother

Promising reviews: "First of all, I don’t know how to write this without sounding like I’m on their payroll. Second, I wish I bought this light years ago!! The difference in my dog’s nose is indescribable, and I forgot to take a before picture so now no one will believe me! It was like watching a chrysalis turn into the smoothest most beautiful butterfly of a nose you could ever imagine! Just. Buy. It." —Amazon Customer

"Well, I have never before been so shocked at the effectiveness of a product. Our 5-year-old Frenchie, Carol, had a nose that was so crusty it was sprouting these long strands of more crust. There was literally crust on crust on crust. The nose had strings of crust. This nose was so crusty and repulsive it was almost beautiful. Her nose might have resembled the rarest, most exotic geode to be mined from the rarest mine in Guatemala. A friend recommended Snout Soother for Carol's repulsive nose. I was worried she would just lick it all off and it wouldn't work. We never imagined she could have a regular, soft, moist nose again. Honestly this product is some black magic stuff! Unbelievable results in three to five days. No one paid me to write this." —Brittany

    11. An adorable animal-themed snood that'll earn them allll the compliments from your neighbors as they patter around the block. This knit snood will keep their neck and ears toasty warm and protected — plus, you'll be able to snap some ridiculously cute photos for the 'gram.

Promising review: "I couldn’t have asked for a more adorable item for my puppy to wear! It not only is adorable but it is also comfortable for her when it is cold out. It fits well and stays on her and keeps her ears cozy. She is a puppy and I did need to train her to want to keep it on, but it did not take long. I now have just about purchased all the different styles for her to wear and she couldn’t be any more adorable while wearing them!! Highly recommend. If your puppy or dog does not like snug things around their head, then order the next size up. It is a little struggle to keep it staying on and ears up. Have fun!!" —Darla rohde

Promising review: "I got this for my girl for a weekend in the mountains. We had weather from FREEZING COLD to nice warm weather! This scarf is great for it all! When it was freezing cold, I was able to put this scarf over my dog's ears to keep them warm! It worked perfectly! Didn’t slip off and she was surprisingly okay with it being on over her ears! I’d say this scarf is definitely a win!" —t_riot

    13. A heater to place in your dog house (or feral cat shelter), because they deserve to stay comfortably warm this winter even if they don't hang out indoors.

Though Bluetooth-enabled models are available as well, reviewers say the connection isn't the strongest / requires close proximity.

Promising review: "Purchased this after researching something that would keep my one outside farm dog warm in the winter since she has been diagnosed with Addison's Disease and has trouble regulating her temperature in extreme heat/cold. We built an insulated dog house inside the old drafty barn and purchased this heater. With this heater turned on medium it keeps it about 50 degrees inside when it was -20 with the wind chill outside. After putting this in and getting my dog to sleep in it, she came out the next morning and did a big ol' stretch. I'd say she is sleeping quite comfortably with it." —Nancy

Get it from Amazon for $129.95+ (available in two models, two cord lengths, and with or without Bluetooth).

    14. And a heated, weatherproof kitty shelter for cats who go in and out of the house — or that stray who keeps coming around because you feed it. It'll offer them shelter from the elements, with a heated, waterproof mat to curl up on and two exits so they can come and go as they please.

Two cats squeezed into the wood-style shelter, tails poking out

It's really meant for one cat, but it's so cozy you might end up with several cats trying to squeeze into it at once!

Promising review: "This is by far the best thing we have purchased on Amazon yet. The thought that went into making this house is amazing. The people who made this thought of everything. It's durable, easy to put together, and it has two openings — which, if anyone knows cats, especially feral ones, they need two openings if they want to go inside something — and it heats up. What's not to love? This was something we were able to purchase because it wasn't too expensive, and now we get to help a homeless kitty stay warm for the winter. You guys rock." —Angela S.

Get it from Amazon for $79.95 (available in three patterns).

    15. Or the Kitty Tube, a fully insulated cat shelter made of recycled materials. It comes with wheat straw for bedding and enough room for two cats (or a mama and her babies). Promising review: "I love the shelter that this provides my outside cats. I should have bought it sooner. My cats come out of it every morning. They love it and they forgot about their old house. It can get very cold and windy here so this is the perfect solution." —Khalei

    16. A ball launcher if your dog loves to RUN after a ball, but you *don't* love to pick up the slimy, muddy toy afterward, especially when the ground is cold and wet. This playtime accessory eliminates your discomfort while also helping you throw the ball way farther — your pup will appreciate the longer play sessions as a result!

A gif of someone using the stick-like thrower in a circular motion to launch a ball from the cup on the end

Promising review: "While my dog struggles with the concept of returning the ball to me, she absolutely loves this! We visit a huge dog park frequently, and this lets me throw a ball far enough that she really gets to run full throttle! I could never throw it far enough on my own to keep her interested more than one or two times before getting the launcher. Now, we can spend an hour at the park playing with it. I have one super-tired dog when we go home. Tired dog = happy dog = happy dog mom. I also love that I don't have to pick up the slimy ball with my hands anymore, especially after she drops it in a puddle, because the launcher picks it right up. My dog gets so excited when she sees the launcher that she will bounce back and forth in front of me until I throw the ball. I only regret not buying one of these earlier!" —C. Fritzche

Get it from Amazon for $9+ (available in various sizes and styles).

    17. A burrowing cave bed for dogs and cats always digging under your sheets and blankets 'til all you can see is a lumpy outline of their body (and honestly, who among us doesn't like to bury under a blanket when it's cold?). The covering on this bed can be used as a blanket or converted into a cave, depending on your pet's preference! The interior is lined with insulating sherpa fleece with an orthopedic foam base to help relieve pressure on their joints — basically, they might just want to doze in this forever.

Promising review: "This bed is amazing. I have had it for about three months now, and it is by far my dog's favorite thing to lay in (including furniture). She’ll even pass up the opportunity to sleep in my bed 80% of the time so she can sleep in her burrow bed. The inside is very soft and keeps her warm. She doesn’t have a thick coat and I keep the apartment cold at night so that was important for me. The plastic tubing is pretty cheap but she likes it better without it so that wasn’t a concern. So far, the bed has held up well but she also doesn’t chew up her beds. Even if I have to buy this bed again in six months, it is still the best money I’ve spent on my dog and she’s pretty spoiled. I would highly recommend." —Amazon Customer

Get it from Amazon for $38.99 (available in pink or grey and in two sizes, plus other styles).

    18. A washable waterproof car seat cover that'll keep them off the freezing cold seat, with breathable mesh that'll allow the warm air from your vents to reach them in the back. And the other main benefit: It'll keep their wet, muddy paws off your seats.

a corgi in the backseat on the car seat cover, showing the breathable mesh at the front that allows for airflow
a large dog in the backseat looking out the side while on the seat cover

This'll be helpful in the summer too, since they'll be able to benefit from your AC!

Promising review: "They thought of everything! Easy to set up and has convenient pockets in easy reach. I picked this one specifically for the mesh insert; it’s well placed to let air from my car’s rear vents pass through. My fuzzy kid is a Weimaraner so she doesn’t have a thick coat for cold winter days. I love how the door protectors zip down on both sides. This makes it easy to let my dog out or put other items in the backseat. I found I didn’t need to use the straps to secure the side door flaps to the grab handles above the doors. When zipped up, they stand upright just fine. This may not be true if you have a smaller dog who likes to put his feet on the window to see out though. The Velcro seam opening for the seatbelts is very strong, no chance it will accidentally open. The cover as a whole is very sturdy and my backseat is grateful for the protection!" —Ava

Get it from Amazon for $28.79+ (available for standard vehicles and trucks, and in three colors).

    19. A pack of pee pads, because imagine how you would feel if someone asked you to go pee outside in single-digit temperatures. These super-absorbent pads turn liquid into gel upon contact, making them a great short-term alternative for your pup until it warms up a bit.

Promising review: "Great deal! Nice heavy duty super large potty mats. We have a small dog, and we use these in the garage in the winter and on rainy days. She never has to venture out in the snow or rain and these pads work great, even one for an entire day, sometimes two days." —Renny

The top zipper is ingenious. It keeps my pup's chest warm. I can actually see that he loves it. He doesn't stand around awkwardly like he does with every other jacket and wait for me to take it off when we walk in the door. He's happy to go trotting into the house with the jacket on. When the temps dip down below freezing and into the single digits, I put on a thermal underjacket for added insulation as well as MuttLuks boots. It isn't the easiest to get on, so take your time and do it right. I suggest putting on boots first, then this jacket. Promising review: "I gifted this to my daughter's tuxedo cat, thinking it would satisfy his love of soft blankies and provide a nice background to show him off in pictures. However, his striped brother has taken it over, smiling as he stretches out on it, sound asleep. Very soft on both sides, polyester for easy washing, and lightweight enough that it will dry quickly. The design is very cute on the grey background, and I'll probably be buying another so all the boys can enjoy their own blankie." —Linnie

"I haven't had a chance to test this in snow yet as it's been unusually nice out here in Alberta! However, the quality is great and the fit is perfect! I was unsure of what size to order as my dogs measurements were on the larger side of the spectrum for the size 2XL, but after messaging them they told me it was better to order a 3XL to make sure she would have enough room, and it fits perfectly." —Madison

Promising review: "We adopted a 1.5-year-old 12–14-pound male cat. His paws have felt colder with the sudden temperature drop in Colorado (7–30s Fahrenheit). We have our house heater on but it can still feel a little chilly. He’s been curling up more. I put this on him and immediately he started acting funny and low crawling. When I looked away, he took it off. I put it back on him and he’s kept it on for a good 24 hours now! His paws feel warmer and balanced :). Although I think it may be a little big and long on the legs, we are satisfied with our guy’s extra layer of warmth. I think he realized he’s warmer too, thus keeping it on. I hope these last for years as it was a big splurge for us during these hard times. We got a size small in mint and olive green 💛 though wish we would’ve gotten an XS. Thank you for these beautiful handmade items. I shared via Insta!" —Zara A.

Promising review: "I've used this snowshoeing and bicycling and so far it's been great. There's a little pocket I can keep a hand warmer and as long as the winds weren't blasting, the little pup kept warm and happy. I use a hydration pack in the laptop compartment, it works great!" —Amanda Slocum

    31. A window insulator kit because with how expensive everything is these days, you're probably already dreading (or trying not to think about) the energy bills this winter. This plastic film goes on your window crystal clear and shrinks to seal out drafts, helping you save money on heating through the colder months while keeping both you *and* your pets from catching a chill.

Promising review: "Install this stuff and watch your heating bills drop. I have high-rated insulating windows in my bedroom, but apparently they weren't installed right, because I could feel cold air coming in all around the window. I covered the whole thing, frame to frame, with this film. My bedroom is noticeably warmer and it doesn't obstruct the view, and warm sunshine still comes in and makes my cats toasty." —Alice H.

Get a 10-window kit from Amazon for $24.80. You can also get an XL kit for a large patio door or windows for $18.33, and a "max strength" version in a number of sizes here.

    32. And finally, a nifty draft stopper you can install (and by "install" we mean peel and stick!) underneath your door if there's a pesky gap letting in cold drafts — probably not your dog's favorite thing while they're waiting by the front door for you to say that magic word ("w-a-l-k").

You can cut the pieces to fit your door too!

Promising review: "We have a cabin type house, with unfinished wood everywhere, including our unusual front door. For years we used a rolled up towel to stop the cold air leak in the winter (not the most efficient means). I installed this yesterday and am so impressed! Because of the rough surface, I also used the included tacks to insure it wouldn't come off. It was very straightforward and simple to install. I took my time in order to get the best seal along the bottom. Even my extremely skeptical husband was impressed! No more cold air leak!! I give 5 out of 5 stars, would recommend 100%." —Laurie A.
