The mountain pygmy possum; also simply known as the Burramys, is a small, mouse-sized, nocturnal marsupial of Australia weighing around 45 grams. The biggest threats to the mountain pygmy possum populations include habitat destruction, climate change, and threats to their prime food source, the bogong moth. Since 2008 the mountain pygmy possum has been declared by the IUCN Redlist as Critically endangered. The most recent study conducted in 2006 at Mount Buller tallied only 30 adults.

The margay is a small wild cat native to Central and South America. The margay is an excellent climber and may spend its entire life in the trees, chasing birds and monkeys through the canopy. Until the 1990s, margays were hunted illegally for the wildlife trade, which resulted in a large population decrease. Since 2008, the margay has been listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List because the population is thought to be declining due to loss of habitat following deforestation.

The Ili pika is a species of mammal that closely resembles a short-eared rabbit. It is endemic to the Tian Shan mountains of northwest Chinese province Xinjiang. Its population is declining, likely due to the effects of climate change. The Ili pika is currently considered to be endangered, with approximately fewer than 1,000 left.

The Baluchistan Pygmy Jerboa is the world’s smallest species of rodent with a weight of less than an ounce at around .132 oz, a body length of 1.7 inches, and a tail length of up to three inches. They are native to Pakistan and Afghanistan and they do not drink water directly. Instead, they get it through plants and insects they eat. The pygmy jerboa is listed as Threatened on the IUCN Red List.

The pygmy hippopotamus is a small hippopotamid which is native to the forests and swamps of West Africa, primarily in Liberia, with small populations in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Ivory Coast. A rare nocturnal forest creature, the pygmy hippopotamus is a difficult animal to study in the wild. Pygmy hippos are primarily threatened by loss of habitat, as forests are logged and converted to farm land, and are also vulnerable to poaching, hunting for bushmeat, natural predators, and war. They were identified as one of the top-10 "focal species" in 2007 by the Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) project.

The vaquita, literally "little cow", is a species of porpoise endemic to the northern end of the Gulf of California.  Averaging 150 cm (4.9 ft) (females) or 140 cm (4.6 ft) (males) in length, it is the smallest of all living cetaceans. They live in shallow, turbid waters of less than 150 m (490 ft) depth. The vaquita is listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List. Today, this is the most endangered marine mammal in the world. The steep decline in population is primarily due to bycatch from the illegal totoaba fishery.
