This Pro-Independence Scottish Teenager Is More Popular On Facebook Than The Labour Party

Jim Murphy's Scottish Labour leadership campaign has some unexpected competition.

A pro-independence Scottish teenager has more online support than Jim Murphy MP to become the next leader of the Scottish Labour party.

In fact, Kyle Renton has become more popular on Facebook than the entire Scottish Labour party. His page "Kyle for Labour leader" is on nearly 7,000 likes, with Scottish Labour on 6,300, and Jim Murphy's campaign lagging behind on 2,200.

"I was at home and 'Jim Murphy for Labour leader' came up as a suggested like," Renton told BuzzFeed News. "I've never liked anything to do with Murphy or Labour before, so I found this quite amusing."

"I came up with the idea to create my own campaign page to prove that people would rather support a 16-year-old for Labour leader than Jim Murphy," he said.

Renton doesn't like what Murphy stands for and finds it hilarious that his page is adding to Labour woes in Scotland: "If Labour doesn't pull itself together again and become a proper people's party, then it will crumble."

"After the referendum, people began to see Labour's true colours – which are more blues than reds," he said.

Renton is one of thousands of 16 and 17-year-olds who voted in Scotland's independence referendum, and he hasn't lost interest in politics since then.

"Politics is something that I will most likely get into in the future. When I'm older, more clued up and old enough to get into politics properly, I hope a lot will have changed in the political world," he said.

He would rather be part of the SNP than Scottish Labour, he said, but what happens if Labour HQ sees his Facebook page and decides he's the man to lead Scottish Labour to electoral victory, rather than Jim Murphy? Would he take the job?

"I'm not sure to be honest with you," said Renton. "Labour seem to be a rather corrupt party. I don't agree with what they stand for just now. But at the same time, I could make some changes and turn it back into the party it used to be."
