USA Soccer Legends Send Support To 8-Year-Old Mili After Soccer Tournament Disqualification For Looking Like A Boy

Everyone knows shorter hair is easier to manage.

Milagros "Mili" Hernandez is an 8-year-old from Omaha, Nebraska who is an outstanding soccer player. So outstanding she plays on a team with 11-year-olds. She also happens to like her hair short. Mili's entire team was disqualified from the finals of a Springfield tournament because the organizers of the tournament saw a 'boy' playing on Mili's team. That 'boy' ended up being a girl, Mili, who was rockin' a short cut hairstyle.

Mili's father, Gerardo Hernandez, told The Washington Post that Mili has been playing soccer for three years and a problem like this has never occurred. After Mili's team was disqualified (for a rule they did not break) Gerardo Hernandez tried to talk to tournament officials to explain the misunderstanding, but officials would not hear him out. Gerardo Hernandez even tried to produce Mili's insurance card as proof of her gender.

Mili said it best herself when talking to WOWT News, "Just because I look like a boy, doesn't mean I am a boy."

Due to the story going viral, two other soccer badasses reached out in support of 8-year-old Mili Hernandez.

Abby Wambach and Mia Hamm both repped the United States women's national soccer team (USWNT) and retired as legends. Wambach and Hamm both tweeted their sympathies for young Mili and offered her some encouragement.

Mili, don't EVER let anyone tell you that you aren't perfect just as you are.i won championships with short hair https://t.co/WlfL3EIPic

@DiCiccoMethod @NEBStateSoccer @WOWT6News Hey Mili, we would love to host you at one of our camps @TeamFirstSA . Be you!

Later, Abby Wambach took to Instagram. Recording a sweet video message, thanking Mili for being so strong.

Hopefully this support will shed some more light on the damage predetermined ideals of how young girls and boys should look does to a kid.

Despite the trouble she went through, Mili plans to keep her hair cut short and continues to play soccer.
