Which Foreign Christmas Tradition Are You?

You are [Krampus](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krampus), the Alpine Christmas devil-beast who likes nothing more than to prod naughty people with his pitchfork.
Krampus is celebrated in most Germanic countries and has his own parade on December 5 – the day before Saint Nicholas day. Which sounds lovely, if you like the thought of hoards of horned devils with long tongues roaming the streets, breathing fire and causing mischief.

Forget turkey, the only bird on a Japanese Christmas dinner table is deep-fried. Japanese families are so obsessed with buckets of fried chicken that they [queue around the block](http://www.smithsonianmag.com/arts-culture/why-japan-is-obsessed-with-kentucky-fried-chicken-on-christmas-1-161666960/?no-ist=) for it and order it weeks before the big day.
They’ve actually got two good reasons for this: 
#1 Most Japanese families don’t have an oven big enough to roast a turkey in
#2 Fried chicken tastes a lot better than over-cooked turkey
Fried chicken-based fast food restaurants capitalise on this by offering value meals that come with champagne and cake.

You might be decking the halls with boughs of holly, but in America they are [decorating their Christmas trees with pickles](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_pickle). The idea is that the first person to find the hidden Christmas pickle on the tree gets an extra gift and a year of good luck.
Why? Because everyone mistakenly thinks it’s an old [German tradition](http://german.about.com/library/blgermyth11.htm), but was more likely a 19th Century American’s joke that got out of hand.
Regardless, folk in Berrien Springs, Michigan, love their Christmas pickle so much that they hold a festival for each December – complete with a pickle parade.

The tradition in the Czech Republic is for a [all the single women to throw their shoes at the door on Christmas eve](http://www.myczechrepublic.com/czech_culture/czech_holidays/christmas_superstitions.html). The throw has to be backwards over the shoulder, not towards it, or at someone. If the shoe lands with the toe pointing towards the door, she’ll meet her husband-to-be that following year. If she hits him in the face with it, he’ll probably be less keen. Slippers are infinitely less dangerous than stilettos.

One of the best Catalonian traditions is 
 [Caga tio, the Christmas log](http://www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/en/events/christmas/barcelona-christmas-traditions.html) . This little guy is a hollowed out log with a smiley face and a red hat that’s brought out ever December 8. The whole family is encouraged to look after Caga tio – they wrap him in a blanket to keep him warm, feed him, and sing to him every night:
“Caga tio, hazelnuts and turron
If you don't want to poo,
We will hit you with a stick."  
On Christmas Eve, Caga tio poops out a load of small Christmas presents and sweets (the type you traditionally find in a Christmas stocking), which can be found if you look underneath his blanket. Bigger gifts are later brought by the Three Wise Men.

[La Befana](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krampus) is an old Italian witch who brings presents on Epiphany Eve (January 5, the day before you have to take down your Christmas decorations). This isn’t as scary as it sounds; not only does La Befana visit AS WELL AS FATHER CHRISTMAS, meaning you get two set of presents, she sweeps the house too. Which is far more appealing than an old man and a herd of deer trampling mud everywhere.

You might be terrified of these leggy creeps, but spiders are considered [lucky in Ukraine](http://www.ukraine.com/blog/spiders-and-their-webs-are-not-showed-the-door-on-ukrainian-christmas). And they’re considered even luckier at Christmas due to a fairytale about a kind-hearted spider who decorates poor people’s Christmas trees with its web. Which is why Ukrainians decorate their Christmas trees with fake spiders and webs.
 [The Night of the Radishes](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_of_the_Radishes) is a Mexican tradition dating back to 1897. It’s most popular in Oaxaca City, where everyone carves the most intricate figure that they can out of a radish on December 23. These radishes are then put on display. Whoever carves the best radish-figure wins a jackpot of approximately £600 and gets their picture in the local paper the next morning. At least they’re not Brussels sprouts.

So, next time you approach a spider with a glass and a card, make sure that card says “Merry Christmas” and the glass is filled with sherry.

In the UK you’ll be shouted at if you don’t eat the food put in front of you, but in Slovakia you’ll [be expected to throw food at the ceiling](http://www.iarelative.com/xmas/loska.htm). It’s thought that a spoonful of turkey and gravy lobbed at the ceiling on Christmas Eve by the head of the household will predict how much luck the family has the next year. The more food that sticks to the ceiling, the better their luck. Unless, of course, you’re the person who has to clean it up.
