How To Meet People In College

Making new friends can be one of the most intimidating parts about starting college. The Dean of Students Office has compiled 5 simple tips to put you on the right track to meeting new people.

1. Remember that everyone is in the same boat.

This is your new start! You're probably excited, but also nervous. Take a look around. Everyone around you is probably feeling the exact same way.

2. Confidence is key.

Be the one to step up and say hello. You'll be surprised at the positive response!

3. Attend Welcome Week!

4. Get involved.

This is probably the most common advice you'll hear when starting college, but that's because it works. You won't make friends by taking naps or not leaving your room when you could be joining registered student organizations (RSOs), going Greek, or exploring our beautiful campus. Be sure to attend Festival ISU on Thursday, August 29, from 10 a.m.–3 p.m. to get some ideas on how to get involved!

5. Communicate consistently.

Did you meet someone really cool? That's great! Be sure to keep in touch, invite them out, and say hey to them on the Quad. Quality time is essential to build new relationships. Illinois State's iconic Meijer Mania is an awesome place to bond with your newfound friends.
