Rogers Fired Sportsnet Commentator Gregg Zaun For "Inappropriate Behaviour"

Rogers Media fired Sportsnet baseball commentator Gregg Zaun after receiving multiple complaints from female employees about his "inappropriate behaviour," the company said Thursday.

“This week, we received complaints from multiple female employees at Sportsnet regarding inappropriate behaviour and comments by Gregg Zaun in the workplace," Rogers Media President Rick Brace said in a statement.

"After investigating the matter, we decided to terminate his contract, effective immediately."

Zaun's firing comes during a period of heightened scrutiny on workplace misconduct that has resulted in several prominent men in media and entertainment losing their jobs following allegations of sexual harassment.

Rogers did not explain the precise nature of the complaints against Zaun, but according to Sportsnet's own reporting, they did not include sexual or physical assault.

Zaun, known for his flamboyant personal style, is a former catcher with the Toronto Blue Jays. He retired from professional baseball in 2011, and he has contributed to Sportsnet and other Rogers Media properties as a colour commentator since 2006.

Zaun did not respond to an email requesting comment.

Zaun issued an "absolute apology" for his behaviour on Monday, saying he never intended "to give offense to anyone."

"I regret my blindness to the impact of my actions that I would have corrected at the time, rather than allowing the harm felt to continue to fester," he said.
