1. The Fundamentals of Caring (2016)

This might be my favorite Netflix Original movie of all time. Paul Rudd, Craig Roberts and Selena Gomez excell at portraying a moving yet uncommonly humorous story about the relationship developed between a boy with muscular dystrophy and his caretaker. By way of their utmost peculiar and witty journey, the characters learn to face their demons and accept their individual realities through the eyes of newly met friends. In a very short time, they explore angst, love, relationships and personal healing, giving a new meaning to the appreciation of life.

This film is special because it embraces everything corrupt and beautiful about life simoultaneosly, through a perception that is both --extremely quirky and devastatingly real.

“I know I've lost my mind. But I'm not concerned, because it's the first thing I've lost in a long time that actually feels good."

2. The Half of It (2020)

Highschool student Ellie Chu helps Paul Munsky write love letters to a girl they both secretly admire. This unconventional love story is fantastic because the plot centers on a depiction of an extremely well-balanced and heartwarming friendship. Although Aster (the girl they both love), is in my opinion a rather bland character, her incluence helps Ellie and Paul originate a perfectly developed and complemented friendship. Ellie's brainwork, eloquence and determination are the perfect match for Paul's affectionate, caring and somewhat clumsy nature. They both end up creating a symbiotic relationship beyond the value of the motifs that initially united them.

This honest and funny story uses exceptional characters to reflect on how love is a completely unique experience for everyone that is fortunate- or unfortunate enough- to find it.

3. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018)

A simple letter exchange between literature lovers leads Juliet Ashton to discover the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Societ, a book club created by means of survival during the Second World War. Juliet promply falls in love with their hardships and stories, becoming so absorted in the group, she forgets about her own personal life. This is an interesting tale of humane characters and the challenges they must face as a result of the stravages of war.

The present film is a complicated lesson of unaffected love, etics and the prices of decision making withing a flawed humanity. It endavours to entertain the principles of personal integrity while posing the question of how much would we be willing to sacrifice to mantain it.

4. 18 Presents (2020)

This story follows Elisa Gritto, a pregnant woman diagnosed with terminal cancer, in her dying wish of leaving 18 presents for her unborn daughter, Anna. Although the plot takes a methaphysical turn in time, the struggles and complexes displayed in the movie are nothing short of real. As mother and daughter receive the opportunity of developing their missing relationship, the viewer also becomes emotionally invested in every deflection of the narrative.

Beautiful acting and directing allows the tale to unfold before our eyes as a stirring and heart-rending experience, leaving the tears to dry as we become obliged to the world that immerses us.

5. All The Bright Places (2020)

Probably the least underrated movie in this list, All the Bright Places is still worth mentioning. The film pursues two teenagers broken by trauma who create a connecting amidst the duel of healing. Violet and Finch contemplate the idea of how the appearance of the right person in your life - even if ephimeral- can change your perspective for good.

Beautiful, genuine and heartbreaking, this story is yet another open scar within the tissue of ending young love.

6. The Laundromat (2019)

Appearing as the most contrasting title on this list, The Laundromat discloses the events of the Panama Papers scandal, inquiring into the concept of money laundering and tax evasion. Ellen Martin, Jurguen Mossack and Ramón Fonseca uncover the secrets behind the truthful state of economic affairs disguised underneath the influence of money.

Harboring an ingeniously dark sense of humor, this non-fiction piece is both, incredibly entertaining and interesting at the same time.

I took the liberty of calling these films underrated because, even if they have been popular and well acclaimed movies in their time, I believe we do not talk enough about them and the messages they beautifully delivered. These stories are sensible and reality-shanking, they explore an unbarred variety of themes that intend to make us more competent, virtuous and overall good.
