A Non-Native Spanish Speaker's Review Of The New CNCO EP

Who are they? Latin-American Boy-Band CNCO takes the world by storm with their new EP Que Quiénes Somo. Here's a breakdown of every track.

Since their formation in 2015, CNCO has garnered more than four billion views on YouTube and continue to become one of the fastest-growing popular boy bands of this decade.

I've had the pleasure of meeting the boys and they are truly some of the most down to earth people I've ever met.

The seven-track EP is filled with versatile sounds and impressive vocals. While I might not be able to speak Spanish, I still appreciate the composition of each song.

For this review, I asked around for a few translations just so I'm not completely in the dark with what these boys are serenading. Here is a track-by-track review of Que Quiénes Somo.

    1. De Cero

Released in June, just in time for your summer playlist, "De Cero" was the lead single off this new EP. The song is about restarting a relationship from zero in order to be with someone you love.

A classic reggaeton beat lays the foundation for this sick tune. "De Cero" makes me think about that one love I wish I had a second chance with. But then I remember all of my exes are exes for a reason.

Truly "De Cero" is a strong start to this EP.

    2. Pegao

"Pegao", which is a term for "come closer", is an infectious tune that makes you want to get off your feet and find the closest cutie to dance with. The first time I listened to it, I wanted to put on my best outfit and have a great time, not caring where the night ended. It's a good party song, almost comparable to their ICONIC "Reggaeton Lento."

The track also features musical duo Manuel and Julián Turizo.

    3. Qué Va a Ser De Mi

Probably one of my favorite tracks on this EP, "Qué Va a Ser De Mi" literally asks "what will become of me?"

I ask myself all the time: What will become of me when these boys release a full-length album after this EP? I have no clue. Stay tuned to find out.

This song, in particular, is something we can all relate to. The uncertainty of our partner leaving us and wondering what happens next? It's daunting but all too real of a feeling.

    4. La Ley

Why'd the best song have to be the shortest?!

Lyrically this is a super cute track about breaking the laws in order to obtain the one thing that matters most in life: love

This song totally got me in my feelings and having me want the kind of love you only find in movies.

There are some fantastic high notes and I appreciate its slow beat, which allows you to catch your breath after the prior three high-intensity songs.

    5. Ya Tú Sabes

"Ya Tú Sabes" or "You Already Know" is sampled from Celia Cruz's "Rie y Llora" and it's a deceptive track that still has me conflicted.

Upon first listen, it sounds like "getting ready with my girlfriend's for a night out." There's a saxophone solo that is absolutely perfect for making you feel confident for the night to come.

But with the translated lyrics, the song is about not trusting your partner and in order to appease you, he gives you his phone for the week without the passcode. I don't have time for mistrust and lack of communication in a relationship so the lyrics are a major turn-off to what could've been a great song.

    6. De Mí

ISSA VIBE! Definitely a favorite of mine and coming from the slight disappointment of the last track "De Mí" makes up for everything!

This track has me wanting to take a drive down an empty highway at 3 a.m. with windows rolled down and no worries whatsoever.

Lyrically, "De Mí" focuses on falling in love for a hookup and wanting more. This is pretty much the story of my life and I'm glad it's put into song.

    7. Toxíca

This is not a Spanish cover of Britney Spears' "Toxic" like I originally hoped, it's much more. I have to give major props to the CNCO boys for producing a full 3:33 track in all acapella.

When I first heard Toxíca was going to just be their vocals, I was worried about how they would pull it off. It's not easy to make an acapella tune but the boys make it seem like second nature.

The harmonies and vocal runs showcase the boy's range and what they can do. Also, we need to figure out who sang the bassline (aka the deepest note) because that was utterly phenomenal.

    Final Thoughts

I'm giving Que Quiénes Somo a solid 4/5. Docking the point for lyrics that depict not-so-healthy relationships that we shouldn't normalize or romanticize. However, the EP still going to be something I listen to for at least the next six months.

If anyone passes me the AUX cord just know this is what we're listening to.
