1. Both cities serve as backdrops for the Home Alones starring Macaulay Culkin (aka the only 2 that matter).
The first Home Alone takes place in Chicago. Remember when Macaulay gets lost in O’Hare International Airport? SO GOOD! The McCallister family home is located on 671 Lincoln Avenue in Illinois.
The second Home Alone takes place in New York. Remember when Macaulay takes a tour of the city in a limousine? SO GOOD TOO! Home Alone 2: Lost in New York was actually filmed in NYC (not a LA studio lot) and was Culkin’s hometown at the time.
A Chicago style hot dog is an all-beef frankfurter with yellow mustard, chopped white onions, and sweet pickle relish on a poppy seed bun. The dog is then topped with a dill pickle spear, tomato slices, pickled sport peppers, and celery salt. Simple? No. Delicious? Yes.
3. Both cities boast impressive skylines and gigantic buildings.
Chicago is home to the Willis Tower (anyone else miss calling it the Sears Tower? WE DO!) which weighs in at 108 floors and John Hancock Center that comes in at a solid 100.
The Big Apple’s, soon te be completed, One World Trade Center will top out at an impressive 104 floors and the Empire State Building coming in just behind that with 102.
Other hip-hop artists who have roots in Chi-town include…
Common, Lupe Fiasco, and Twista. All three multi-platinum selling rappers actually hail from Chicago. None of that “right outside of the city” BS.
Other hip-hop artists who call the Big Apple home include…
Nas, Lil’ Kim, and of course… Biggie. Collectively these three NY based rappers have sold 33 million records domestically. Biggie and Kim make Brooklyn proud while Nas reps Queens.
New York’s Mafia scene was run by “The Five Families:” Gambino, Genovese, Bonanno, Lucchese, and Colombo. (Pictured above: John “Teflon Don” Gotti, former boss of the Gambino family.)
6. But more importantly they’re home for America’s most beloved families!
Chicago is where The Winslows put up with Steve Urkel’s antics. While the series, that ran from 1989 to 1998, was actually filmed in California, the Winslow house is actually located in Chicago and still stands to this day on 1516 W. Wrightwood Avenue, Chicago, Illinois.
And The Huxtables keep New York’s sweater industry in business. Bill Cosby insisted that the show be actually shot in New York City as opposed to on a set in Los Angeles. The Huxtable house is located on 10 St. Luke’s Place, near 7th Avenue in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village.
8. But it’s not all scary, they’re also acclaimed for their comedy scenes.
Chicago’s Second City fostered comedy icons like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Both ladies moved to New York where Amy helped found Upright Citizen’s Brigade. UCB has helped introduce the world to a new wave of comedians including Aziz Ansari, Aubrey Plaza, and Donald Glover.
