5 Things Unique To Illinois State University

There are some things that you can only find at Illinois State University

Those who go to Illinois State know it's a pretty special place.

For those who haven't gotten the chance to visit campus (yet!), they may not get to see what Illinois State is like on the surface. Either way, we will let you in on all the unique things about Illinois State University.

1. Illinois State University was the first public university in the state of Illinois

In 1857, Illinois State Normal University (its original name) was opened and became the first public university in Illinois. 43 students enrolled for the first term, and classes were held at Majors Hall on the third floor in Bloomington.

2. Reggie Redbirds is an Illinois State celebrity

During the early years of Illinois State University, our nickname was the "teachers." In 1923, our nickname was changed to the "Redbirds." Since then, Reggie has been at every home game helping cheer on the Redbirds to victory!

3. The Gamma Phi Circus is the oldest collegiate circus in the nation

Who can say that their college has its own circus? Gamma Phi Circus was founded in 1929. They first took the show on the road in 1947-1948 around Illinois. Since then, the group has become the largest in the nation. It no longer goes on tour, but Gamma Phi puts on a showcase every spring!

4. The Quad is an arboretum

The Quad at Illinois State is a great hang out on a nice day. Whether you play Frisbee with friends or hammock among the many trees while reading a book. In 1867, Jesse Fell was granted $3,000 to plant around 1,500 trees in the area. Since then, buildings have been built but there are still lots of trees, giving Illinois State arboretum status in 1995. The Fell Arboretum made Illinois State the first university to achieve Tree Campus USA Status in 1998. It makes for some beautiful pictures and great shade.

5. We will never miss an opportunity to ring the Victory Bell

The victory bell made its debut in 1964 during the football season. It was first rung to celebrate President Robert Bone returned from a six-week tour in Egypt. Since then, it precedes the football players onto the field, rung after every Illinois State touchdown, and a big attraction for the Homecoming parade!
