A World Of Possibilities For English Majors

I'm an English Major constantly questioned about what I can do with my degree. Many people assume teaching, but there are endless possibilities for English Majors, and their role in society goes beyond the classroom and being a grammar Nazi. Here are just a few possibilities for English majors and a few English majors that have careers that diverge from teaching. However, in the end teaching is for the passionate, and shouldn't passion be what motivates you to get up in the morning?

    1. Law. Countless hours of reading and analyzing texts down to the way a word is spelled is the norm for an English major. This skill works quite nicely for lawyers as they pore over legal documents.

    2. Pilot. The ability to work in a team and with different cultures is a must when piloting an aircraft and globetrotting. Also, the attention to detail one needs when planning routes and dealing with the machinery mimics the mechanics of an essay.

    3. Business. Literature teaches many things, and one is how people work. Former CEO of Disney double majored in English and theater. "Literature is unbelievably helpful, because no matter what business you are in, you are dealing with interpersonal relationships," Eisner says. "It gives you an appreciation of what makes people tick."

    4. Television Industry. English majors know how to work with people, have organizational skills, and are able to communicate ideas to a wide variety of audiences, using the handy skill of rhetoric. Conan O'Brien, is an English major who made it as a television host, which uses his skills in rhetoric as he appeals to the audience.

    5. YouTube. An English major has the interpersonal skills and critical thinking to work in the actual company. However, English majors also shine quite nicely when it comes to content creating as these English majors transitioned from English teacher to managing their own YouTube channel that has more than one million subscribers.

    6. Politician. Want to be a politician who makes change, no problem. Interpersonal skills, critical thinking, and empathy are important traits. However, the biggest skill English majors learn that is perfect for politicians is rhetoric.

    7. Marketing. English majors know how to reach multiple audiences, understand them and then use rhetoric to persuade them, which works quite well when marketing something.

    8. Musician. For English majors who enjoy writing creative peaces whether they are inspired by the poetry or literature they study, if one has a penchant for music they could combine the two. Sting was an English major who certainly did as he became a singer/songwriter.

    9. Author. Passion is something that English majors have in common as we pursue our degree because we love what we are learning, and that the major brings us a vast amount of possible jobs is just a bonus. In an interview with UHWO’s prof. Clements, she shared a moment that most English majors have, as prof. Clements puts it, “I want to make my living as a writer,” becomes a goal. Although that career path is a risky one, the pay off is fulfilling and the actual pay isn't too bad either as illustrated by Stephen King.

    10. Teacher. This is a fulfilling job, and if you have a passion for it, money and people's opinions don't matter. Also, English teachers have the ability to travel and teach across the globe through programs like JET and TALK, which is an awesome perk.
