Here’s Everything You Need To Jump Into "The Orville" S3: An Insider’s Guide To The Series

Attention Orvillians, your favorite mid-level exploratory vessel is in the atmosphere. That's right, the crew of the USS Orville is back in The Orville: New Horizons!

But it's been a few Earth rotations since we last saw the weirdest crew in the galaxy so here's a little guide to The Orville universe before they blast off again.

First of all, Ed and Kelly's relationship has matured and so has the show!

In the pilot of the show, Mercer found himself in the uncomfortable position of being in command of the USS Orville...with his ex serving as his number two. But, much like the show, Ed and Kelly have set aside the absurdity of their past to navigate much more complex storylines.

Kelly is no longer the only one to have a romance with Ed.

In “Nothing Left Except Fishes,” Ed falls into a discreet relationship with Lieutenant Janel Tyler. When Ed decides to take Janel on a romantic trip, their shuttle is intercepted by the deadly Krill. This episode is full of twists that ultimately inform us of Ed’s ability to see the best in people. But this decision plants a seed that will come to fruition in Season 3’s “Gently Falling Rain.”

The relationship between Dr. Claire Finn and Isaac continues to be the heart of the show.

In Season 1's "Into the Fold," Claire and Isaac bond after he protects the lives of her two young boys during an ill-fated vacation. In Season 2, their relationship blossoms in "Happy Refrain" and remains steady, until a catastrophic series of events occurs in "Identity Part 1 & Part 2.” Make sure you watch those episodes if you haven't already so you can appreciate how their relationship transforms from there.

Then, there's the ongoing conflict between Bortus and Klyden about how to bring up their child, Topa, on a Union ship while respecting Moclan culture.

A cornerstone of the Moclan culture is that it considers itself an all-male race and does not acknowledge females. Bortus and Klyden are faced with a cultural hindrance as they gave birth to a daughter named Topa. To keep with their species’s values, they change Topa’s sex to male at the end of “About a Girl,” with the audience understanding that she has never been made aware of her born gender. This, however, isn't the end of Topa's struggle with her own identity or Bortus and Klyden’s individual views about it, as you'll find out in Season 3’s “A Tale of Two Topas.”

Gordon is in love with a woman who is not only out of his league but also out of his time period.

In "Lasting Impressions," the crew discovers a time capsule from 2015. While most of them focus on the capsule's contents, Lt. Gordon Malloy obsessively focuses on the woman whose cellphone was found inside, Laura Huggins (played by Leighton Meester). Gordon’s obsession leads to a tumultuous relationship within the ship's simulator. See how that fictitious relationship transforms into one of meaning for Gordon in Season 3’s “Twice In A Lifetime.”
