At the beginning of the play, Romeo is nothing but a lovesick teenager, as he had fallen for a girl who did not love him back. Romeo prefers to mope around, confiding in his friends, rather than his family, about his predicament. When Romeo meets Juliet, however, everything changes. The dangers of life pale in comparison to the intensity of his love for Juliet. Romeo becomes more impulsive, trespassing on his enemy's property in order to get a glimpse of Juliet, and killing her cousin in the heat of passion. Romeo also has an idealized view of romance, thinking that no wrongdoing on his part or the parts of others can keep the two star-crossed lovers apart. This optimistic nature ultimately is his downfall, as a "happily ever after" ending with Juliet ultimately succumbed to death.

Romeo

At the beginning of the play, Juliet is simply an obedient daughter. She knows nothing of love, and will try to fall for Paris in order to please her parents. Although Juliet has a naive understanding of love, she realizes that love does not solve all problems. Later in the play, however, she falls for Romeo. Unlike Romeo's sense of love, Juliet's understanding of the concept does not transfer from one person to another. It is both steady and intense. Juliet is less impulsive than Romeo when it comes to love, less likely to take risks. She is willing to throw aside, however, her role as an obedient daughter. She later comes to the conclusion that a life without her lover is not worth living, and after Romeo dies, calmly and deliberately decides to kill herself.
