Shows I Watched During Quarantine (and You Should Too)

I watched Dark twice in the span of two months.

1. Kingdom (Netflix)

Kingdom is Netflix's first original Korean series. I watched this one at the beginning of quarantine and was amused by the similarities between the events on the show and real-life (like the mysterious "illness" sweeping throughout South Korea). It's the kind of show that will definitely make you want more after you finish the final episode.

2. Cobra Kai (Netflix)

I watched the first two episodes with one of my friends on Youtube last year and it definitely caught our interest but we never went back to it until it started to get distributed through Netflix. It hits the nostalgia factors in ways that shows like the Saved By the Bell and Girl Meets World reboot failed while managing to stay fresh and relevant for Zoomers and Millennials. I for one am looking forward to the upcoming season next month.

3. Utopia UK (Channel 4)

Utopia UK is stunningly similar to 2020. An illness that was caught and brought in from another country, a vaccine with adverse side-effects that could include infertility, friendships with people they met online because of a web-comic. Brilliantly written and acted and not to be mistaken for the Amazon Prime show, this has definitely stayed with me long after I finished it. There are some disturbing elements that involve children. I am probably not doing this brilliant show justice with my explanations.

4. Dark (Netflix)

Dark was probably one of the shows I liked the most out of all the ones I watched over lockdown/quarantine. A mind bendy, sci-fi drama telling you any more would probably give too much away. I'll just urge you to watch it.

5. Unsolved Mysteries (Youtube/Netflix)

I spent most of the summer rewatching old episodes of Unsolved Mysteries on Youtube and then binging the new series on Netflix, and trying to solve the mysteries. I've always loved true crime and though the unsolved aspects are unsatisfying, it is fun to play armchair detective. And the theme song will never fail to be unsettling, in the best possible way.

6. The Promised Neverland (Netflix)

This is probably one of the cutest and saddest shows I watched all of quarantine. This is an anime about kids at an orphanage who think they live an idyllic life until they accidentally discover that everything is not as it seems.

7. West Wing (NBC)

This is actually one show that I'm still working on but I think it's a very enjoyable show and it helped me brush up on American government after years of not thinking about it. I just wish we could have voted for Jed Bartlett in the 2020 election.

8. Hey Arnold (Hulu)

This is another show that I'm still working through right now. Hey Arnold! is what I call a "side-show". Something I'm watching next to the bigger, darker main show I'm binging at the moment. It's a very gentle show with themes that transcend into adulthood.

9. The Haunting Anthology (Netflix)

I watched both Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor practically back-to-back in September and October. Everything that needs to be said about these shows has already been said multiple times and probably way more eloquently than I could ever put it. I will say, they're both so much more than horror shows and cheap jump scares. If love stories of all kinds aren't enough to make you want to watch it, I don't know what is.

10. Gravity Falls (Disney+)

I avoided this show for so long because I wasn't a huge fan of the animation. The only reason I didn't regret skipping it for so long after I actually did watch it was because it was a great experience getting to watch it with the person I did. When I finally got around to watching it, I instantly fell in love with the humor, the supernatural elements, and the mystery. It's exceptionally well written and enjoyable for kids and adults alike.

(on a side note, if you like Gravity Falls, I suggest you check out Amphibia. The creator has sighted Alex Hirsch has an influence and it's obvious. Including a cameo appearance by the Gravity Falls characters in a season 2 episode that aired this summer as part as Disney Channel's crossover weekend).

11. Perry Mason (HBO)

I've only been a casual viewer of the OG Perry Mason thanks to parents and grandparents. The prequel interested me because I heard RDJ was going to star but then they cast Matthew Rhys (which turned out NOT to be a mistake). I tuned in originally out of curiosity and stayed to see the shocking mystery through. I can't wait for season 2.
