What does it mean to be a researcher? How can one possibly boil down all that time, sweat, and tears into a few character traits in order to generate a few possible personally types? In our experience, you can't, and quite a bit of research has been done on the process (trust us). But we've done our best, so sit back, relax, and find out what type of researcher you truly are.

What Is Your Researcher Personality?

What's your favorite color?

What's your favorite type of source?

How do you go about searching?

Why do you think you should evaluate online information for credibility?

Do you really think a quiz can tell you what type of researcher you are?

Why do you think you should use different sources in your research?

Finally, what's your favorite part of the library?

You don't just ask research questions. You ask all the questions. What's the best way to search, should I change up my keywords, is this source more credible than that one? When it comes to research, you always want to find the answers, but you have a tendency to drive yourself a little bit crazy in the process. Remember to slow down and take your time during the research process. Research can be fun if you let it, and remember, if you leave some questions to be answered, that just means more research for you to do in the future!

The Questioning Researcher

You've never met a research situation you didn't love partaking in. Keywords? You have at least a dozen in your back pocket on a good day. Research questions? More like research answered! You love doing research; however, that doesn't always translate to you knowing how to do research. Sometimes you let your enthusiasm get you in over your head. Try creating a research plan or process in order to map out all the steps you need to take in order to answer that final research question. Remember it's not a race to the finish line if you don't even know where the finish line is.

The Enthusiastic Researcher

For you, research is a puzzle, and you are determined to get every piece perfectly into place if it's the last thing you do. You take research a little more... seriously than most. There is a right way and a wrong way to conduct research and most people just happen to do it the wrong way in your opinion. Sometimes, however, you have a tendency to burn yourself out. Remember that there are others around to help you, and maybe, just maybe, they might have better ideas than you.  It's okay to let other people put the puzzle together too.  Learn to enjoy research not just for the final accomplishment but for the journey it is.

The Perfectionist Researcher

Research has a tendency to leave you a little stressed. Not because you don't know how to do it but because you want to make sure you do everything right, right? You just don't want to let anyone down including yourself, your group members, your professors, your parents, your university, your... Remember, it's okay if things don't go okay the first time. Research is a process, and we often learn more from our failures than we do from our successes. You're on the right track. Keep it up. Everything will be okay in the end!

The Worried Researcher

Who cares about research? You most certainly do not. You only do it because it's required of you but the bare minimum is all they are getting. You're too exhausted by all your other course work, your job, your personal life to care enough to find that credible source your professor keeps droning on and on about. Something about peer review? You don't know. But remember, putting in barely any effort into your research only hurts you (and those who could benefit from it) in the end. It's important to take time for yourself. Maybe you're burned out. Maybe you're not in the career field you're meant to be in, which is what makes doing research so exhausting. Talk to your professors, your friends, see what they have to say and how they can help you get out of this research funk. Research can be fun if you let it!

The Exhausted Researcher

Here's the thing, you have no idea what you're doing, but you're trying, and that's what counts right? Well... sometimes, and sometimes you end up using some many limiters in the library database that you are no longer getting any search results, which means no sources for your paper. Never fear, there are other ways to do research, so maybe five those limiters a bit of a break. Try looking into Boolean Operators or giving keywords a try. Narrowing down your topic into a research question can also help steer you into the right direction. Research can be tricky, and a bit overwhelming at times, but with time and patience, you'll be a research superstar!
