Katy Perry And Skip Marley's GRAMMY Performance Got Political And I'm Here For It

POTUS: *cracks knuckles and pulls up twitter*

Since Meryl Streep took the stage to accept the DeMille lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes in 2017, celebrity advocacy for political affiliations has been a subject of controversy.

Streep was certainly not the first A-Lister to drag the Trump Administration and the rhetoric of his campaign. But a woman of such wealth, success, and fame voicing her political opinions drew arguably more attention to said controversy than any other celebrity. Political commentators such as Tomi Lahren claimed that Streep used her spotlight at the Globes incorrectly and insensitively. Ultimately, the argument seemed to be that the Globes are a night to celebrate great performances in film- nothing more. Lauren shook her fist to the sky as she slammed Streep for tainting a night of celebration with her political views.

But fear ye not, because Katy Perry and Skip Marley just took the stage at the GRAMMYS to prove that resistance is never futile.

While Perry has yet to release an official music video for the song, its lyrics are not devoid of political undertones.

Lyrics from Marley's chorus include: "Up in your high place, liars/Time is ticking for the empire/The truth they feed is feeble/As so many times before/They greed over the people/They stumbling and fumbling/And we about to riot/They woke up, they woke up the lions." Additionally, Perry has openly supported presidential candidate Hillary R. Clinton in the past, and performed at the 2016 DNC. Her public disdain for Donald Trump has motivated her, alongside countless other A-Listers, to use their platforms to voice their political opinions despite the fact that some everyday citizens believe them to have no right to do so. Clinton has yet to respond to Perry and Marley's performance, as has POTUS. I guess we shall have to wait and see what the future brings.
