Would YOU Have Been A Cosmopolitan During Ancient Athens?

Should breastfeeding a child be done in the home or wherever?

What about popping your pimples? Save it for your own bathroom? Or you gotta be fabulous PRONTO?

PDA... ja oder nein?

Picking your nose/other bodily habits

What about studying in public?

Sitting smack dab in the middle of a walk way?

Taking a puff puff of that cigarette?

What about walking up public steps on all fours?

Putting on makeup in class?

Sleeping in public?

Should a parent discipline his or her child in public?

Walking barefoot?

Taking a piss in plain sight?

Tree climbing is a hobby, right?

What do you feel about taking selfies in public?

What about finding your zen with some yoga outside?

What about dancing like you just don't care?

Should you FaceTime your boo in public?

Should you be allowed to pray in public?

Traditional Athenian men highly valued Athenian citizenship, which was restricted to property owning males. (Women, slaves, children, and those too poor to own property were exempt). The idea of an Athenian citizenship held such an ideal connotation that Plato even refused to escape from prison because this would break the rule of law, effectively tarnishing the Athenian ideal, CRAZY! Political order had a highly exclusive and deeply restricted hierarchical society. Adult male citizens could exploit children, women, and slaves to meet their private needs so that they had free time to participate in public affairs. Public and private were thus kept very separate in the ancient world. Societal norms dictated with extreme enforcement, what should and should not be done in the public sphere. Anyone deviating from these norms were outcast and deeply shamed. It looks like you would agree!

Diogenes said "screw you" to Athenian society and insisted that the concept of private and public spheres shouldn't exist. He claimed he was a "citizen of the world" (not just Athens) and wanted everyone to basically do everything as they wished, without regard for social norms. He would've answered 'Public' to all these questions! Do you agree with Diogenes?

You would be a follower of Diogenes, a cynic cosmopolitan!
