Former Karens, Tell Us What Made You Change Your Ways

Have you ever asked to speak to the manager?

Karens. We all know at least one: The high-strung restaurant patron who always asks to speak to the manager. The entitled customer screaming at a cashier in the checkout line. The white lady who constantly patrols her neighborhood, looking for any excuse to call the cops. Karens are all around us.

But...have you ever caught yourself being a Karen? Do you feel that you used to be one? Or even that a parent or friend used to be a Karen, but has since changed their ways?

If so...what changed things? It could be something simple. Like...did you cause an employee to cry when you asked to speak to their manager, helping you to realize how overworked they were?

Or maybe you took a hard look at yourself in the wake of the #BlackLivesMatter movement and read up on anti-racism so that you could start to unlearn your own biases.

Maybe Trumpism caused you to realize you didn't want to be associated with other Karens — causing you to start un-Karen-ifying yourself.

Or maybe the pandemic caused you to realize how hard essential workers have it, meaning you treated grocery and retail workers with more patience and grace.

If you have an experience catching yourself Karen-ing, or you or someone you know went from being a Karen to changing their ways, we want to hear it! What caused the change, and how did you/they shed your/their Karen ways? Let us know in the comments below (or via an anonymous form here) and you could be featured in an upcoming BuzzFeed Community article.
