The Ultimate Holiday Tradition Bucket List, According To My Mom

Hey, I'm Ashley, and I asked my mom what we should do this season. On top of decorating our tree with Hallmark Keepsake ornaments, this is what she said.

Here's my mom and my bowl cut in front of our tree in 1985.

Christmas has always been a big event in our house, so when I asked her what we should do this year my mom had some strong feelings. Scroll down for her answers and what I think they really mean.

1. "Go have hot chocolate at that fancy restaurant and see all their pretty stuff."

Ashley's translation: She was talking about our favorite German restaurant, and they actually don't serve hot chocolate.

2. "Make a popcorn garland. We used to do that all the time. Well, I did. You were little and just ate the popcorn, but I did it — and we should do it again!"

Ashley's translation: We should spend more time doing arts and crafts together. I'm all for this — especially if the craft is edible.

3. "Oooooooh, put snowflakes on your windows. Ya know? With fake snow. You spray it on. Or you can also use soap and a sponge. Cut out a snowflake design and decal it on, you know? And then you take it off and have a snowflake on your window."

4. "Build a snowman on Christmas morning, unless there’s no snow — then you can’t build a snowman."

5. "Put up the Christmas lights with your father, but don't forget you can't plug in more than three strings together at a time."

Ashley's translation: I don't know if this is a real thing, but my dad has said it every single year of my life, so it's drilled into all our heads.

6. "Make the veggie dip in a bread bowl. If you can't find a solid pumpernickel loaf, a pre-cut one can work too."

Ashley's translation: Trueeeeee.

7. "Go ice skating with a boy in Central Park."

Ashley's translation: She's digging and trying to figure out my relationship status.

8. "Drink Uncle Stew's eggnog — but only one cup."

Ashley's translation: I love eggnog, but I'm also lactose intolerant, so she's just lookin' out.

9. "Get all dressed up for Christmas Eve dinner, and enjoy your family."

Ashley's translation: We didn't get to spend last Christmas together, so she's really looking forward to this one. So am I.

10. "Put up the tree while listening to carols and decorate it with all of Nana's best ornaments."

Ashley's translation: My Nana had an awesome Hallmark Keepsake ornament collection she'd add to every year. We have a few favorites, and my sister and I still fight over who gets to hang them.
