10 Uplifting Facts About How We're Winning The Battle Against HIV

The world is full of survivors and fighters. To honor World AIDS Day, Coca-Cola (RED) is highlighting Project Last Mile, an initiative that shares insights with organizations about how to distribute medicine to hard-to-reach places.

1. There hasn't been a baby born HIV-positive in the city of San Francisco since 2005.

2. As of 2016, we have seen mother-to-child transmission of HIV completely eliminated in Cuba, Belarus, Armenia, and Thailand.

3. Nearly half of the adolescents around the world with HIV live in six countries: South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Zambia.

4. Thanks to increased access to prevention and treatment programs, AIDS-related deaths have fallen by 45% in the last decade.

5. In 2015, 77% of pregnant women with HIV had access to antiretroviral treatment (ARVs) for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of the virus (PMTCT).

6. In the year 2000, only 700,000 people had access to life-saving ARVs. Today, that number has increased to 18.2 million.

7. There are currently 18.2 million people receiving ARV treatment, and as of 2015, 12 million of them are in Sub-Saharan Africa — a region where access to treatment has more than doubled in the past five years.

8. In 2005, 1,200 babies were born every day with HIV, and by 2015, that number was cut by two-thirds to 400.

9. In 2000, the cost of ARVs was $10,000 a year. Today, this cost has been reduced to as little as $100 a year or roughly 30 cents a day.

10. During the 10th anniversary year of (RED), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will match every dollar donated to (RED) up to $78 million.
