2. The U.S. National Team is the hottest team in the world right now.
The U.S. National Team just beat Mexico 2 – 0 to clinch its spot at the 2014 World Cup. A big win that was part of its rise from 20th to 13th in the FIFA World Rankings. That rise also reflects a very recent 12 game winning streak, which was the best in U.S. Soccer history, and only 3 short of Spain’s all-time record. Those 12 games included defeating Germany, winning the Gold Cup, and a memorable comeback 4-3 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina.
3. An American superstar has returned after dominating in Europe.
Back from his impressive time abroad in England, Clint Dempsey just signed a big contract to spend the next few years stateside with the Seattle Sounders FC. Watch Fulham’s all-time leading goalscorer in the EPL behind the scenes on his return.
7. In this country, soccer is a game for everyone.
MLS is the most diverse professional sports league in the United States, where soccer players come from every race, size, and background. Robbie Rogers recently became the first openly gay athlete to play a North American professional team sport when he signed with the LA Galaxy. This is what pride looks like for soccer supporters in the United States.
9. And now these players are international stars.
American players are in demand. The proof? English Premier League team Sunderland FC just paid $13 million for U.S. forward Jozy Altidore (pictured above, netting one against Bosnia), and American midfielder Michael Bradley has earned the nickname “il Generale” playing for Italian giants AS Roma.
10. This is what the national anthem sounds like in Portland.
Fans at a Portland Timbers game don’t need anyone to sing the National Anthem for them. This will give you the chills.
13 new MLS soccer-only stadiums have opened in the last 13 years and more are coming in San Jose, DC and New York. This means new expansion teams are coming to more cities everywhere, including a second team in New York with NYC FC (owned by Manchester City and the Yankees). Whose side will you be on?
