Everything You Need To Know About The Canadian Federal Election

This isn't as hard as it looks. Cast your ballot in the Canadian federal election.

1. The Canadian Federal Election is on Monday, October 19.

2. If you’re a Canadian citizen who is at least 18 years old by election day, and can prove your identity, you can vote.*

3. You also need to be registered to vote.

4. Next, make sure your address is up to date.

Being a resident of the country is not enough! If you've recently moved for work or school, make sure your listed address is correct. You can check on that here.

5. Then you need to find out what riding you vote in.

6. Students: You can choose to vote in your home riding or your school riding.

Just make sure to update that address. There's no need to spend a weekend with Mom and Dad, but let's be honest: They'd probably like to see you.

7. Remember: You need to show proof of who you are and where you live to vote on election day.

That means ID and proof of address. Proof of address includes things like bank statements, cheques from work, or a utility bill. All of them must have your name and address printed on them. Check out the requirements.

8. If your ID does not have your current address, take an oath.

This allows someone who knows you to verify your current address. It's called "attesting your address." This person must meet certain requirements listed here.

9. Many Canadians living or studying abroad can vote too.*
