12 Things That Will Make That Sydney To Byron Drive So Much Better

You don't have to smash out the eight-hour drive in the one day, you know.

Posted on

1. Stop off at Bouddi National Park for a swim and one of the best coastal walks in the country.

Half an hour from Gosford, this national park has several walking tracks, a campground, and some of the best beaches on the Central Coast.

2. Slide down the sand dunes near Port Stephens.

You can go ~sandboarding~ at Stockton Beach or jump on a quad bike if you're game.

3. And while you're in the area, check out One Mile Beach.

An hour past Newcastle is this long stretch of beach. There are BBQ and picnic areas if you want to stop for lunch by the sea.

4. Myall Lakes National Park is three-and-a-half hours from Sydney and pretty special too.

If you're after a place to spend the night, Mungo Brush Campground has 78 campsites.

5. Leave your own pretty mark on a rock at the V-Wall at Nambucca Heads.

This outdoor gallery is meant to be added to, so bring some paint and something interesting to say.

6. And get your obligatory photo at the Big Banana.

You have to.

7. Woolgoolga, which is just 26 kilometres past Coffs Harbour, is a sweet coastal town with some cool markets.

On the third Sunday of the month the Woolgoolga Fresh Food Market is held, and every first and fourth Saturday is the Bollywood Beach Market.

8. Or, head inland towards Dorrigo National Park.

Around an hour from Coffs Harbour and Nambucca Heads is this World Heritage-listed rainforest.

9. If you love prawns, pay Yamba a visit.

The area is famous for its prawns and fish. There are also farmers markets held every Wednesday selling even more local produce.

10. And if you really, really love prawns go check out the big one in Ballina.

Honestly, what a sight.

11. Before you actually hit Byron Bay, take a slight detour and pay a visit to Nimbin.

Nimbin is a... unique place. In the '70s and '80s there were several communes surrounding the area, but now it's all about that very laid-back, ~arty~ vibe.

12. And if you head a little north of Byron you'll hit Mullumbimby, where you can visit the Crystal Castle and Shambhala Gardens.

Look, even if ~crystal healing~ isn't your thing, there's no denying that these things are damn pretty.
