From NSA To LTR, The 10 Terms You Must Know When Using Gay Dating Apps

And didn't know who to ask.

    LTR

    ”Long Term Relationship”

Yes, we are as skeptic as you are, but according to surveys (And perhaps in contrast to most of our personal experiences), gay men are looking primarily for a long term relationship and marriage. Nonetheless, if someone wrote LTR it does not necessarily mean that it will be with you, so tread carefully and as always, a quick fun is still always an option.

    NSA

    ”No strings attached”

A popular term used to indicate a fun sexual encounter, a hook-up, a fling, a wild night… We think most people would agree that NSA is the default state of mind with most gay men, but you never know what can actually become from it. Some great relationship and friendships came out from what seemed at first as an NSA moment.

    FWB

    “Friends with benefits”

A cute phrase meaning an amicable, platonic relationship, with the occasional physical, sexual fun. It can be a very efficient arrangement, instead of hooking up every time with strangers.

Still, experience does tell us that this is usually a temporary solution until one side gets emotionally attached and just compromises to have this instead of a relationship. Go have fun, just be careful with each other's feelings.

    PrEP

An abbreviation of the term Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis. This term describes the general use of drugs as a preventative treatment. Nonetheless, this term has been used directly (and solely so far) as the name for a preventative drug treatment against the contraction of HIV. Users must remember that PrEP does not prevent other sexually transmitted diseases, thus the practice of safe sex is still highly recommended.

    BB

    "BareBack"

Also known as "Raw sex" - describing being in a natural, bare or unprepared state. In the gay community, this term is used to describe the wish or practice of unprotected sex, without condoms. As the use of PrEP increased so did the practice of unprotected, raw, bareback sex.

    PWB

    Power Bottom

If you read this far , we will assume for argument's sake, that you know what a bottom is. The term comes to describe a bottom that has the capabilities and the inclination to like long and wild anal intercourse. In most cases, a power bottom will be looking for well endowed (Hung) guys (One or more) that like to practice rougher, wilder, long-endurance, deeper sex. Do not confuse with the term “dominant bottom”, which describes a bottom that loves to be in control.

    PWT

    Power Top

This should be easy by now. The term simply describes a top that prefers rougher, wilder sex. This wilder tendency does not mean that he is into BDSM or kink, but just may prefer more submissive bottoms or the practice of more aggressive, rougher sex, with or without anal penetration. Make sure you clarify what both of you are looking for before you meet and any limits you should have :)

    PnP / HnH

Party and Play / High and Horny

Sounds cute and naive, doesn't it? Like an invitation to a play strip poker but this term is actually an invitation to “Chemsex”, a sexual encounter that usually involves the use of drugs prior or during. Some people may find the act more enjoyable under the influence, but you should know what you're getting into before you go into situations you don't know.

    ASL

    Age, Sex, Location

It seems that the more free time we have, the less patient we all become, which is most evident in the way we all text message today, even to our friends and family. This impatience took over gay dating apps as well, with no more time for pleasantries or fully crafted sentences. The term ASL came simply to make it clear and quick, instead of asking someone for their age, sex and location, you simply type ASL and await an answer. In Gay apps, Sex does not refer to your gender but rather to your sexual role - Btm, vers, top or any other combination.

    DL

    "Down Low"

There is no doubt that the LGBT community has made great progress in recent years, but as we all know, being gay is still stigmatized even in the most progressive cultures. As such, many men still prefer to be discreet regarding their sexuality and secretive about their sexual encounters. When you see someone writing DL, it signals that he is seeking to engage in a discreet or secretive manner and is not open about his sexuality.
