7 Tips For Throwing The Perfect Board Game Night At Home

Getting ready to host game night? Here are our favorite tips and tricks for making it the best one yet.

1. Invite the right amount of pals.

The perfect game night needs the perfect amount of people. So while drafting up your invite list, consider which games you’ll be diving into. Will you be playing something that’s more fun with a small group? Or a game that allows a larger group of friends or family to play in teams? You want to make sure you have enough people to get your game on, so plan accordingly! 

2. Dig into some classic games.

TBH revisiting the classics is always in. And whether that’s spinning old records, shopping for vintage clothes, or watching black and white movies, there’s no reason we can’t include playing classic board games on that list too. For a board game night that never goes out of style, consider adding some OG games like Sequence, Mastermind and Rummikub to your lineup. 

3. It’s allllll about the snacks.

The best part of game night besides winning? Eating. It’s crucial to have plenty to munch on while playing! Opt for finger foods that are easy to snack on, so you can focus on holding your cards, rolling the dice, and crushing your opponents (according to the rules, of course). If you want to make your game night extra memorable, try your hand at some game-themed snacks! Sugar cookies that look like Rummikub tiles, anyone? 

4. Revisit the rules.

If your guests are new to the games (or it’s been a while for them), they’ll be turning to you for help. So make sure you know your stuff! Take a peek at the instruction book before the night starts, and have it handy in case conflict arises — you might have to play referee if it gets heated! If you have some true newbies in your group, consider taping a poster board to the wall with some basic rules they can reference mid-game.

5. Get ready for the photo op.

Your #gamenight is about to be the hottest ticket in the group chat — and all you have to do is a little DIY. Make your board game night extra 'grammable with a photo booth complete with game-themed props. Blue, green, and red confetti to celebrate Sequence? Check. Rummikub joker masks? Of course! Giant Mastermind pegs made from toilet paper rolls and mini balloons? Can’t wait to pose with them! No matter what game you’re playing, give your friends something to post about. 

6. Spice up the competition with prizes.

Winning isn’t everything, but it sure is fun. Encourage some healthy competition by ending the night with awards for everyone attending, but make sure no one leaves empty handed! Besides the coveted 1st Place prize, throw in awards like “Most Improved”, “Most Confused by The Rules,” and “Beginner’s Luck Award” to the list. 

7. HAVE FUN!

This is not so much a tip as it is an absolute order. Game night is the perfect time to bring people together over some snacks and much needed laughs. Go forth and game!
