Tips On Getting Involved On Campus

Gwynedd Mercy University has a TON of clubs & organizations to get involved with. Not sure where to start? Check out these tips from Rouseline Emmanuel-Frenel, Director of Student Activities and Leadership Programs.

1. Find a Healthy Balance

It’s important to keep up with your coursework, but you also need to find some activities to take part in outside of the classroom. If you’re a special education major, then the special education club might offer you the opportunity to expand on your coursework and also volunteer in the community; the best of both worlds!

But it’s important to carve out some time for both studying and socializing. And you’ll probably make some new friends (and study partners) along the way.

2. Start Early

The Student Activities Fair is a great place to discover the available clubs and organizations on campus. If you’re a new student, this is also a great opportunity to find people on campus who share your interests and values. If you’re a returning student, maybe you want to branch out and try a new club.

But don’t wait too long: the first six weeks of college is the ideal time to join a club and start feeling connected to the campus and to your classmates.

3. Try Some Clubs on for Size

Not sure if the Peer Mentoring Association is right for you? Are you interested in the Voices of Gwynedd but unsure what exactly is required?

You’re more than welcome (and even encouraged) to go to a couple of meetings for different clubs to see which one is the best fit for you. Going to an introductory meeting doesn’t mean you’re obligated to join, and it’s the easiest way to determine if it’s a club you can see yourself being a part of.

4. Don't Overdo It

You might initially find a few different clubs that suit your interests, but be selective in the clubs you join. You don’t want to burn out by December, so take it slow. Join just one or two clubs at first, and if you have some free time later in the semester, seek out new clubs then.
