Coming to Mexico is easy, but getting used to the clash of cultures might take a while. Prepare yourself for some of the most surprising things you will experience in Mexico!

#1 So where the heck are all these typical Mexicans you expected to meet?

Germans might have some quite stereotypical images in mind when thinking about Mexicans. So where are the Mexicans riding their horses along from bar to bar, passing a bunch of cactuses, always ready to take a sip of Tequila? …well, sad but true: it will be hard to find these originals in the big cities. But taking a trip deep into the countryside, you have a good chance to meet one or another example ;)

#2 Safety Issues?

"Oh you are going to Mexico? Don't you fear to get shot over there"? Nope, actually if you are a little carful and consider the advices of your local amigos, there is nothing you will need to worry about. Uber is one of the safest kinds of local transportation and your department will be secured at least by a rigid fence or even a nice old safety guard. The new (there are a bunch of them) police "Fuerza Civil" is kind of trustworthy, at least if you got some pesos with you ;)

#3 Know your neighbourhood.

But be prepared: The neighbourhood you live in can be one of the safest your city has to offer, however, if you walk down the block for 100m, you also can end up in one of the worst districts around. Get to know your sourroundings before wandering around cluelessly at nighttime - trust me ;)

You think you know something about Tequila? No you don’t. In contrast to the stuff we know and have in Germany, in Mexico you are blessed with cheap stuff that leaves you happy without anything like a headache in the aftermath.

#5 Tacos y Salsa

Sure, you expected some tacos and salsa – but be ready: there are so many different kinds for each and every time of day and so crazy many salsas for every kind of meal…mix them up and your amigos will look at you as if you were mixing mashed potatoes and Nutella chocolate for breakfast.

You look at least a little European? Well, that´s experienced as super exiting by our amigos y amigas. Expect photo sessions and unintentional selfie-bombs where ever you go, whenever you go, if you want to or not.

For some, taking a picture just isn´t enough. Expect a lot of touchy “oh, can I touch your hair?“ encounters. I got used to it - but as ginger dude you don´t really have an other option ;)

They like light “beer” over here. It has about half of the alcohol content, but at least the bottles are often twice as large as in Germany. One can work with that. Prost!

#11 The Plastic Bag Dilemma

Mexicans like to put their groceries in plastic bags. MANY plastic bags. But the ecological downside also brings some social upside with it – the retiree packing your bags on the cashpoint often earns himself the necessary supplemental income to raise his little Mexican pension.
