Major Decisions: Why Your Major Might Not Matter

From a graduating student account, why you shouldn't freak out about your major

If you are a student, this looks all too familiar, especially when asked what your major will be, A.K.A what you'll do for the rest of your life.

Young people make up about 40 percent of the unemployed in the United States, and many millennials are realizing that in order to be successful after college, a degree alone isn't going to cut it.

But what if I told you, that all of the work you put in for four, maybe five years wasn't really going to help you as much as you thought?

According to recent research, while 62% of recent college graduates are working in jobs that require a degree only 27% of college graduates are working in a job that even relates to their major. That's right, you might not even work in the field you're studying for.

For those entering college in the fall, know that you aren't the only one with questions about college and what you will do. According to an Assignment Masters survey, a specific degree doesn’t lead to greater success on the job market.

So why does it even matter? Good question.

It matters because just the work you are putting in is going to set you apart from those who don't go to college, even if you chose not to pursue your major field. If you don't know what to do, or what you are doing, branch out and try other things. Join clubs, organizations, sports. Ultimately, those may look better than your degree does.

You're gonna be okay, kid

Pick a major that you think you might enjoy. Unless you have dreams of being a neurosurgeon, there is more than one path to almost every career. Even if it feels like this is the biggest decision of your life, it's not. Cover all of the basis, get your degree but also think about other education outside of your degree, maybe an internship or sports club. You are going to do great, just keep on keeping on.
